  1. Middle Ages Vocabulary

  2. Town -a community smaller than a city and larger than a village.

  3. Charter -a written grant of rights and privileges by a ruler or government to a community, class of people or organization.

  4. Guild -an organization of people who work in the same craft or trade.

  5. Apprentice -a person who works for an expert or master in a trade or craft in return for training.

  6. Commerce -the buying and selling of goods.

  7. Merchant -somebody who sells goods, products or services.

  8. Bubonic Plague -a deadly contagious disease caused by bacteria and spread by fleas on rats.

  9. Privy -an outhouse or outside bathroom.

  10. Stock or Stockade -a form of punishment...a wooden frame with holes for the person's legs and/or arms.

  11. Magna Carta -a written agreement from 1215 that limited the English king's power and strengthen the rights of the nobles...and eventually, the rights of the common people.

  12. Habeas Corpus -the principle that accused persons cannot be held in jail without the consent of a court.

  13. Crossbow -a medieval weapon made up of a bow that was fixed across a wooden stock and operated by a trigger. Good for only short range.

  14. Cannon -a weapon that fired heavy iron balls or other projectiles through a simple iron tube.

  15. Longbow -a large bow used for firing feathered arrows. Good for long range.

  16. Truce -an agreed-upon halt (stop) in fighting

  17. Nationalism -identification with, and devotion to, the interests of one's nation.

  18. Hundred Years’ War -a series of wars fought by France and England between 1337 and 1453.

  19. Specialization -to focus on a specific job or part of a job. -to make a specific type of good/product.

  20. Parliament -governing body that gave a voice to common people as well as nobles/lords.

  21. Medieval Faire A gathering of buyers and sellers, assembled at a particular place with their merchandise for trade.

  22. Crusades A series of military expeditions from Christian Europe to Palestine between the 11th and 13th centuries to reclaim the “Holy Land.”

  23. Interdependence • A relationship between one or more groups when each gives and gets from the others • Groups of people who rely on each other and really need to work together.
