The Cotton Gin • The Cotton Gin is a machine that automated the separation of cotton seed from the short staple cotton fiber. • It could generate up to Fifty pounds of clean cotton daily, and was considered one of the best inventions of its time.
Eli Whitney’s Business Failures • Although Whitney was the creator of the first Cotton Gin he was unable to patent his original design. • Because of this, he could not prevent others from building similar machines, and copies of the Cotton Gin sprang up all over the U.S. • Whitney also was unable to earn any money off the Cotton Gin.
