  3. What's the missing link? In second grade, children continue to build their reading skills. They will read stories, poems, and folktales, as well as information about the world, history and science. Second grade children will apply word analysis skills to unfamiliar words (e.g. distinguish between long/short vowels, know spelling-sound correspondence for common vowel teams, decode words with prefixes and suffixes). Second grade reading skills are introduced and supported during guided reading, partner reading, literature discussions, content area reading (e.g., science, social studies) and independent reading time with teachers, caregivers, family members and community members. Within these structures, children participate in a wide variety of activities (e.g., ask and answer “w” questions, describe author’s purpose, learn new vocabulary words, identify main topic; discuss illustrations, etc.). (2nd Grade Common Core Standards)

  4. ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT READING GROWTH AT HOME: ? Ask your child to retell stories, fables and folktales ? Look for books that are on topics that your child may be interested in. ? Ask your child “w” questions (i.e., who, what, where, when, why) about the text ? Encourage your child to read with fluency by rereading familiar texts ? Invite your child to compare and contrast events, characters, and versions of the same story ? Help your child with word meanings to expand vocabulary development ? Encourage your child to read different kinds of materials (e.g., chapter books, informational texts, poems, websites, magazines, newspapers, etc.) The number of students scoring Below Basic proficiency in grades 2, 4, and 7 will decrease from 19% to 15% as measured on the Scholastic Reading Inventory in May 2016. RATIONALE: The pre-assessment data on the SRI concludes that our students are not reading at a proficient level at the beginning of school
