  1. 8th, 9th, 10th Commandments 8th Grade

  2. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. • Basic Value: Respect for truth, especially as it affects one’s reputation, is everyone’s right and responsibility. • Today’s Issues: 1. The scope of this commandment extends to all situations of lying and dishonesty. 2. Idle gossips & cutting remarks have a similar effect.

  3. 3. It is also wrong to tell lies about another person or to tell others about another’s faults. 4. Calumny & slander are telling lies about another person. 5. Detraction is telling others anything (even the truth) that detracts from another person’s reputation. 6. If a person commits the sin of detraction, he or she must do everything in his/her power to repair the reputation of the injured person.

  4. You shall not covet. • Basic Value: Genuine morality requires not only right actions but also right attitudes. Internal conviction is as important as external conformity in the area of sexuality & property. • Today’s Issues: 1. The 9th Commandment forbids us from desiring to commit sexual sins.

  5. 2. Such desires are called lust & we may not dwell on them. 3. Instead, strive for the virtues of modesty & purity, and to show respect for others. • Today’s Issues: • The 10th Commandment forbids us to covet, or to want for ourselves, what belongs to another.

  6. 2. This Commandment also forbids us to envy, or to feel sadness at, another person’s possessions, talents, & good fortune. 3. Envy can be avoided or combated through good will, humility, and by recognizing that God will provide what we need. Today’s Issues: 1. The 9th & 10th Commandments point to the internal aspect of morality.

  7. 2. The moral response is not merely external conformity. 3. They require internal conviction. 4. The heart of a person manifests itself in that person’s actions.
