Charts • Chart • Visual representation of worksheet data • Enhance and simplify the understanding of numerical data in a worksheet because the relationship is illustrated • Data series • The column with numerical data • Series name • The label for the data series • Categories • The division of data within a series • Category Labels • Text in cells adjacent to the data series

  3. Chart Objects • Chart Title • Describes what is charted • Legend • Corresponds to the category labels • Data labels • Identify each value in the data series • Plot area • Part of the chart that displays data • Chart area • Entire chart and all of its elements

  4. Creating Pie Charts • Pie Charts • Best for charting data this is a percentage of a whole • Includes only one series of data • Each value from the series is represented as a slice • To create • Select the data range to be charted • Insert → Pie → then choose the type of pie chart

  6. Moving, Sizing, and Deleting Charts • Charts may need to be moved to display data better • Click and drag the chart border • Home → Cut • Design → Move Chart

  7. Printing a Chart • A chart that is an object in worksheet is printed when the worksheet is printed • File → Print • View → Page Layout to determine if the chart will fit completely on a page before printing • To print only a chart • Select the chart and File → Print

Copying a Chart into a Word Document • Charts are often included in reports and other business documents to support and simplify the understanding of the text. • To paste from Excel into a Word document • Select the chart • Home → Copy • Display the Word document • Place insertion point where the chart is to appear • Home → Paste • Use the Paste Options button to display a list of options for the pasted chart

Creating Bar and Line Charts • Bar charts • Useful for comparing the differences between values • Can include several series of data • Each bar representing a value • Bars can be vertical or horizontal • Vertical – column chart • Horizontal – bar chart • Contain the following objects • Chart title – describes what is charted • Axes title – describe the data • Legend – corresponds to the series names • Vertical or value axis – contains values • Horizontal or category axis – contains category labels • Horizontal axis labels – calculated by Excel based on the maximum value in the data • Major gridlines – mark the major intervals on an axis

  11. Creating Bar and Line Charts • Line Chart • Can include several series of data with each line representing a series • Each value in a series is a point on the line • Useful for displaying the differences of data over time

  15. Formatting a Chart • If a chart is to be used in a document or report, format it to complement the formatting used in the document or report. • Page Layout → Themes • Shape Styles on the Format tab to change the border and color of a chart

  17. Sparklines • Sparklines • Mini-charts that can be inserted in a cell • To insert • Select the range of cells that the sparklines are to appear • Select the appropriate type of sparkline from the Insert tab
