  6. Soil’s living organisms Roots, fungi, bacteria and small animals Plants thrive in this layer Wind and water can wash away this layer (erosion) Take over 500 years to replace 1 inch of topsoil. First layer- top soil

  8. Less living matter than the other 2 layers What the other 2 layers are formed from Ex. – rock left over from the glaciers or organic matter deposited from water. Parent material

  10. Silt • Smooth like flour • Keep the soil rich and smooth • softball Soil Texture

  11. Clay • Wet – sticky, greasy • Dry – hard like a rock • Marble Soil Texture
