Standards of Conduct • Be responsible! • Read lab and safety information BEFORE you start the lab • Eating, drinking, gum chewing, applying make up, and moving contacts are not permitted during labs • Instructor must be present during lab work • Unauthorized investigations are prohibited • Entering preparation or chemical storage areas is prohibited • All chemicals or lab equipment should remain in the lab unless authorized by the instructor
Personal Safety • Dress appropriately: safety goggles/glasses, lab aprons, gloves, close-toed shoes, long hair pulled back, no loose or baggy clothing, no dangling jewelry • Know where the safety equipment is! • All accidents, spills, and injuries must be reported to the instructor immediately • Wash your hands with soap and water after handling organisms and plants
Standards for Maintaining a Safe Environment • Keep workspace clean • Clean up after yourself • Dispose of all materials properly • Sinks are for the disposal of water and solutions designated by the instructor only • Wash glassware with hot soapy water • Goggles should be worn during the investigation, clean up, and through hand washing
All labs are different • We will always review lab safety precautions that apply to the labs we’re doing beforehand • While I don’t expect to you to memorize every single lab safety rule I’ve listed out, you should memorize the golden rules so that you make good choices in the lab.

Practice • What is not acceptable about these lab investigations? Pause the video and jot down your answers. Scenario #1 • Cindy broke a test tube. Carefully she picked up pieces with one had and placed them in her other hand. Then she dumped the glass pieces into the wastebasket. Scenario #2 • Mike and Ikehad a lot of a chemical left from their investigation. They dumped the chemical in the sink and left the water running in the sink as they left class. Scenario #3 • Jimmy and Cricketwere going to be late to their next class. After rushing to put away a few materials, they left the rest of the materials on the lab table.
