  1. Acts 4:1...(a) Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, Acts Acts Who are they? Peter and John! Acts 3:10, 11 Acts Acts I want you to notice please that this is the “first” persecution of the church.

  2. Acts 4:1...(b) Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, Acts Acts The Priests...Who are these? Well, we all know that all the male descendants of Aaron were priests. It’s been said that in the time of Jesus they were almost 20,000 priests. Since there was only one temple (located in Jerusalem) the priests were divided into groups. There were twenty four groups, each group served in the temple for one week twice a year (1 Chronicle 24:1-6; 2 Chronicle 22:8). Acts Acts

  3. Acts 4:1...(c) Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, Acts Acts Who was this man? Not a military officer, but one in charge of the priests and Levites who formed the temple police and kept watch by night. This man was the right hand man, the chief executive officer or chief of staff to the high priest. He was probably what the scripture calls the chief officer. Jeremiah 20:1; 1 Chronicles 9:11; 2 Chronicles 31:13; Nehemiah 13:13). Acts Acts

  4. Acts 4:1...(d) Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, Acts Acts Who were the Sadducees? The Sadducees were a small group who denies the resurrection of the dead, Acts 23:6-8. During His ministry Jesus debates in many occasions with the Sadducees. - Mat.22:23-33. Acts Acts

  5. Acts 4:2...(a) being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. Acts Acts They were greatly disturbed! Yes, but what was the reason for this disturbance? They preached Jesus to the people. Acts 3:14,15 Acts Acts

  6. Acts 4:2...(b) being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. Acts Acts They were greatly disturbed! Yes, but what was the reason for this disturbance? They taught about the resurrection. Matthew 22:31,32 1 Corinthians 15:50-55... Romans 6:5... Philippians 3:10,11... Hebrws 11:35... Revelations 20:5-6... Acts Acts

  7. Acts 4:3...(a) And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. Acts Acts And they laid hands on them. But what was the crime? Remember please Jesus’ prophecy concerning this when he says: Matthew 10:16-26 This is exactly what they were looking for from the beginning. They want to stop the name of Jesus from being preached, they know that they are guilty but they want to kill the evidences by silencing the messengers. Acts Acts 2 Timothy 3:2; Acts 10:38

  8. Acts 4:3...(b) And they laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. Acts Acts At what time did they go to the temple to pray? At 3:00PM, Luke says that now it’s evening: probably close to 6 PM. Acts Acts

  9. Acts 4:4...(a) However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. Acts Acts • The word of God is not empty or void, the word of God will not return void. God always fulfills His purposes. • Isaiah 55:11… • 2 Timothy 2:9… Acts Acts Believe it or not, there are always results when the word of the Lord is being spoken. Results for salvation or results for perdition but the Word is never VOID!

  10. Acts 4:4...(b) However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. Acts Acts When Satan begins to give us a hard time, some of us become greatly discouraged: “We might as well quit”.Nothing is going right! Consider this please: • 1. Good things can happen when someone rejects the word in front of others. • 2. God always uses ways that we don’t know to open the heart of others. • 3. When honest hearts listen, it doesn’t matter who denies it, they will obey. • Luke 8:15; Romans 1:16. Acts Acts

  11. Acts 4:4...(c) However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. Acts Acts People always listen! Many believed the Word: I want you to understand that the word “believed” in here does not mean that these men merely reach the point of believing that Jesus was the messiah. “Belief” is used in the comprehensive sense of “trust and obedience”. Acts Acts We are talking in here about 5000. Are they different from verse 2:41? Or is Luke including 3000 plus 2000 which is equal to 5000 or 3000 plus 5000 which is equal to 9000?

  12. Acts 4:5,6...(b) And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. Acts Acts The next day, another day; that means that Peter and John for the first time and for Jesus’ cause they are put in jail and spend one day behind bars. They are treated like real criminals, the reason: Preached Jesus… Taught about the resurrection. Acts Acts

  13. Acts 4:5,6...(b) And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. Acts Acts Apparently the matter is very important to all of them because they call the whole clan of the religious leaders. Acts Acts Rulers, Elders, and Scribes this, I would say is a general statement to refer to the Sanhedrin.

  14. Acts 4:5,6...(c) And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. Acts Acts • 1. The rulers would refer to the whole body. • 2. Elders would refer to the most esteemed of the nation.3. The whole Sanhedrin was sometimes simply referred as to the elders. • 4. Scribes was a definite profession of men, the experts, the doctors of Jewish law and tradition. Acts Acts

  15. Acts 4:5,6...(d) And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. Acts Acts I want you to notice also that among the Rulers, Elders and Scribes, Luke also mentioned other names: Annas Acts Acts • This fellow was apparently recognized as a high priest by most Jews. He had actually been removed from power by the Romans but he has been so influential among his peers that he was still recognized as the power behind the throne. • John 18:12-14… “ Luke 3:1, 2… “

  16. Acts 4:5,6...(e) And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, 6 as well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. Acts Acts • Caiaphas. He was the high priest according to the Romans in those days. • Matthew 26:3-5… “ Acts Acts John... Who is this man? Alexander...How about this one... ?

  17. Acts 4:7..(a) 7And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” Acts Acts They set the apostles in the midst of their assembly. Probably Peter and John at this point they remembered the words of Lord Jesus when he said: Matthew 10:17-20… Acts Acts The question that the court asked was straight to the point:

  18. Acts Acts Imagine please you as a Christian in the middle of the whole counsel looking for a friendly face and wherever you turned you see long faces ready to question you why you healed this man? This same group was the group who killed Jesus, they are not in the position to spare the life of the apostles, if they killed Jesus, they will also kill his followers. Acts Acts

  19. Acts 4:7..(b) 7And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” Acts Acts This is all they want to know. You know very well that this is the same group who killed Lord Jesus. Matthew 26:3-5… “ Imagine that this is you the one that they are questioning, also imagine that your life depends on the answer that you give…What would you have said? Acts Acts A few days before Jesus’ crucifixion, the same men had come to Him and asked, By what authority are you doing these things? Matthew 21:23… “

  20. Acts 4:7..(c) 7And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?” Acts Acts They are trying to follow what Moses told them, to try every man who claimed to be a prophet… Deuteronomy 13:1-5… “ By what Power have you done this: What is this? The healing of the lame man. Acts Acts Luke 22:66-71

  21. Acts 4:8..(a) 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: Acts Acts • Note how quickly God came to their rescue. Even though they will have the help of the Holy Spirit, they have to be strong and remember again what the Lord told them. • Matthew 10:28… “ Acts Acts Matthew 10:32, 33… “. Mark 13:11… “ Luke 21:12-15… “

  22. Acts 4:8..(b) 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: Acts Acts • Note please that Peter is talking in all respect when he said: Rulers of the people and elders of Israel. He recognized that… 1 Peter 2:17… “17Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. Acts Acts

  23. Acts 4:9..(a) 9“If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10“let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. Acts In a very dignified way Peter and John told them that if they were making a judicial examination concerning the good deed done for a weak human been and still was restored, then he had the answer… Acts Acts

  24. Acts 4:9..(b) 9“If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10“let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. Acts Acts Peter wants all to understands and believe that what he is about to say is very important and worthy of all attention… Acts Acts

  25. Acts 4:9..(c) 9“If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10“let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. Acts Acts You want it to know, I am here to tell you: This man has been healed In THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST… Acts Acts Onoma= Authority, Power, Command.

  26. Acts 4:9..(d) 9“If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10“let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. Acts Acts Jesus = Savior. Christ = Messiah. Nazareth = Only one Jesus. Acts Acts

  27. Acts 4:9..(e) 9“If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10“let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. Acts Acts The same accusation that he made on Pentecost, is the same that he makes when he was healing the lame man, now this is exactly the same in front now of all the “authorities”. Acts Acts Acts 2:36, Acts 3:13, 14…

  28. Acts 4:9..(f) 9“If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, 10“let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. Acts Acts The word whole (sesotai) means to be saved, to be made whole, to be safe and sound, to be healed, This means that the person was healed from his physical problems. Peter is not talking about the eternal salvation, salvation is obtained only when the person is “willing to OBEY! Acts Acts

  29. Acts 4:11..(a) “This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Acts Acts Did they Reject the Lord? Yes, we all know that Jesus was rejected by his people. The Bible says that on many occasions they threw Jesus out of their cities. They begged Jesus to leave their cities… John 1:11, 12… Mark 8:31… 1 Peter 2:4… Matthew 8:34… Acts Acts

  30. Acts 4:11..(b) “This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Acts Acts Peter, without worries nor intimidation declares that Jesus is the Head, that is, the chief Corner Stone of God’s building. This passage quoted by Peter was taken from the book of Psalms. Psalm 118:22… “ Acts Acts

  31. Acts 4:11..(c) “This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Acts Acts God gave man the Head Cornerstone for His building, the life he wanted man to build. But man set the stone “at nought”, counted as no good, unacceptable, of no count, of no worth. Man rejected God’s Headstone and went about finding their own chief stone and building their lives as they wished. • Matthew 21:24… • Ephesians 2:20… • 1 Peter 2:6… Acts Acts

  32. Acts 4:12..(a) “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts Acts This is the reason why any other foundation will not work. Jesus is the pillar and the real foundation. For us the Christians to say this, is joy and glory. We recognize Jesus as the only savior; outside of Jesus no one can be saved. Acts Acts • Jesus Christ saves. There is no other head. No other exalted Lord; therefore, no man can be saved… • By any other head or lord. • By any other name under heaven.

  33. Acts 4:12..(b) “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts Acts No teacher is capable enough, no prophet is noble enough, no preacher is good enough- to save himself, much less anyone else. Therefore, no matter the claim, no matter the indulgence and strength of the name, the man comes far short of being God’s chosen head. All men are mortals; no man can make another man immortal. Jesus is the Only Savior. Acts Acts John 3:16… John 6:68… John 8:24… 1 Corinthians 2:2… 1 Corinthians 3:11… Proverbs 14:12… Matthew 7:13…

  34. Acts 4:13..(a) 13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. Acts Acts It was very easy to see that Peter and John are not in the position to deny Jesus anymore; it is this boldness that surprises all 70 members of the Sanhedrin. It was the power, the boldness of these two men that caused the rulers to recognize them. The rulers had witnessed the power and boldness in Jesus, and now His two disciples are acting exactly like Him. Acts Acts

  35. Acts 4:13..(b) 13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. Acts Acts “Uneducated and Untrained” The idea here is that the apostles had received no formal training. They were unknown to men but to God they are well known. They realized that they had been with Jesus. How can people recognize if we are of Jesus? Can people say the same about us, can they recognize that we are Christians? Acts Acts 1 Corinthians 1:9; 1 John 1:3; Revelations 3:20; Psalm 5:3; Psalm 55:17;Psalm 77:12…

  36. Acts 4:14..(a) And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. Acts Acts These are the types of miracles that nobody can deny. The lame man is not sitting at the entrance of the temple’s door, he’s now standing! The miracles now days can be denied at any time. Don’t worry, those can be denied at any time but this miracle cannot be denied. And, why is that? Well because the recipient of the miracle is there to testify. Acts Acts

  37. Acts 4:15..(a) 15But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, Acts Acts The elders commanded Peter and John to go outside the council, that is, out of the room where the Sanhedrin was meeting. The Sanhedrin then engaged in a discussion. They wanted to deny this miracle that has occurred but they are trapped, they cannot do it so now, they will plan something else… At one point the Bible says that they gave money to some false witnesses in order for them to deny the resurrection of Jesus… Acts Acts Matthew 28:11-15…

  38. Acts 4:16..(a) saying, “What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. Acts Acts This is the conversation that they had… What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a notable miracle has been done through them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. Bible miracles cannot be denied! The leaders recognized that. Acts Acts

  39. Acts 4:17..(a) “But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.” Acts Acts Every false teacher is exactly like that. When they cannot deny the truth, then they use the oldest practice that has existed since the beginning: The Lie! a. Matthew 5:11… b. Matthew 10:22… c.  Philippians 1:28… 2 Timothy 3:12… Threat is the tactic that they want to use. Are they going to prevail? No! Jesus had already warned his disciples about this… Acts Acts

  40. Acts 4:18..(a) 18And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. Acts Acts Do you believe that Peter and John would bargain for such a cheap price? Do you think that they will concede just to make the religious leaders happy? I don’t think so…I don’t believe that Peter and John would bargain for so little. What would you have you done in this case? Would you have denied Jesus? Think about it please! What the council wants is for Peter and john to be disobedient to the message, to the commandment. I do not think that they will do that. Acts Acts Matthew. 28:19...Acts. 1:8...

  41. Jesus Christ that is now SEATED at the throne of God was the one who constituted these two men as apostles of His Gospel and now they will not give up or compromise this Gospel for anything... The rulers want to close the disciples mouth at any price… Acts Acts 1 Kings 22:27… “ • It doesn’t matter what they do or try in order to stop the gospel, nothing will stop it. Not even: • - John the Baptist’s death. Matthew 14:1-12… “ • - The death of Stephen. Acts 6:10, 7:51,58… “ • - The Paul’s persecution. • - Jesus death… Acts Acts

  42. Acts 4:19..(a) But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. Acts Acts Peter and John are not going to pay attention to the demands of this group of corrupt men. Somebody may ask: But they are disobeying the authorities and Jesus has taught us that we must respect all authorities…Yes in part that is true but in part it is not. They knew the answer! As religious leaders they knew what the commandment in Exodus 20 was. Peter does not need to talk more. You Judge! Be the Judge! Matthew 22:21 Acts Acts Romans 13:1-4 1 Peter 2:13-17

  43. Acts 4:20..(a) 20“For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” Acts Acts • The apostles were not puppets that they can drive at their will. They were serious people that were very deep into the obedience of Christ. For we cannot! There is no possibility in this world that we are going to keep it quite! Simply we CAN’T! • The reason that the apostles gave: We have seen! 1 John 1:1-3. Acts Acts • Matthew 28:18-20. • Mark 16:15, 16. • John 14:6… • Matthew 17:5. • Matthew 11:28-32. We have heard!

  44. Acts 4:21..(a) 21So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done. Acts Acts The result is that after looking for some way to punish the disciples and not finding any wrong doing from them, they came with the decision to threat the apostles even more. “of the people”. Acts Acts Clearly we can see that they “were afraid of the people”. They were afraid of the whole mob coming after them in case they touch the two disciples.

  45. Acts 4:21..(b) 21So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, because of the people, since they all glorified God for what had been done. Acts Acts The consequences of the miracle are seen in the last part of verse 21… since they all glorified God for what had been done. This is what happens when we don’t compromise the truth, this is what happens when we are rigid, firm and steadfast in what we believe. Acts Acts • Matthew 5:16… “ John 15:8… “ 1 Corinthians 6:20… “ Colossians 1:12… “ Hebrews 13:15… “ 1 Peter 2:9… “ Psalm 9:11… “ Psalm 35:28… “ Isaiah 42:12… “

  46. Acts 4:22..(a) 22For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed. Acts Acts The miracle was even more valid when Luke says that the Lame man was “over forty years old” This miracle was one hundred percent undeniable! In 3:2 Luke says that he was lame from birth so this is why the authorities decided not to fight anymore. Acts Acts

  47. Acts 4:23..(a) 23And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. Acts Acts Jesus has said it already that the true believer shall suffer persecution. Christ says so. John 15:20… “ They reported and shared their experience with all the church. Please let’s note several striking facts: Peter and John were NOT DEPRESSED, discouraged, or downcast. Neither were they stricken with fear and trembling. They were not suggesting the church withdraw into a hole and keep its message to itself. What I can see is that even though they are threatened they are not beaten, defeated and silenced. Peter and John were not puffed up, they know that they are suffering for the cause of Christ and they are happy for this. Acts Acts

  48. Acts 4:23..(b) 23And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. Acts Acts They went to their own companions…I like this. The companions in here I believe are the other Apostles, there is more people praying to God on our behalf when we have problems. Who do you go to when you have problems? Acts Acts

  49. Acts 4:24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, Acts Acts “When they heard that” Who are 'THEY'? Acts Acts I believe that they are the Apostles. Many think that this “they” Are the whole church, but verse 31 says that they were filled with the Holy Spirit again. What do people do when they receive blessing and protection from God? THEY PRAISE GOD!

  50. Acts 4:24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, Acts Acts There is no other that can help us but God. He is the Deliverer, He is our shield and Our Strength. Philippians 4:13… No Man can help us in the way God Does! Acts Acts
