  5. Introduction to Contraception • Key Point #1: There are many types of contraceptives, with varying degrees of effectiveness. • Please take notes on the different forms of contraception, especially how to use them properly. • Contraception is useless if used improperly!

  6. Coitus Interruptus (“Pull-Out”) • Unprotected intercourse, where the male removes his penis from the vagina prior to ejaculation. • Perfect-use failure rate: 4% • Actual failure rate: 15-28% • Can anyone guess WHY?

  7. Calendar Method (“Rhythm Method”) • Pre-ovulatory (green) phase length varies based on stress, medication, sickness, if woman is coming off of the pill, etc. • Perfect-use failure rate: 10% • Actual failure rate: 25%

  8. Spermicide • Gel, cream, or foam that kills sperm. • -cide = killer • Ineffective when used on its own (29% failure rate). • Often comes pre-packaged with condoms. THIS IS BAD. • Not enough on these condoms to be effective. • Decreases condoms’ shelf-life. • May cause urinary-tract infections in women.

Oral contraception (“the pill”) • Taken once a day. • Contains hormones: either progestin alone, or progestin with estrogen. • Prevents women from ovulating (releasing egg). • Cannot become pregnant if there is no egg to join with the sperm. • Perfect-use failure rate: 0.3% • Actual failure rate: 8% • Can anyone guess WHY?

  10. “The Pill” – Side effects • Beneficial side-effects: • Clearer skin • Weight loss • Protection against certain types of cancer • Regular, lighter periods and fewer cramps • Unwanted side-effects: • Acne • Weight gain • Breast tenderness • Nausea and vomiting

  11. Condoms (Male and Female) • Physically blocks semen from entering vagina • Male: fits over shaft and head of the penis • Female: inserted deep into the vagina, extends outward • Failure rates: • Male condom, perfect-use: 2% • Male, actual: 15% • Female, perfect-use: 5% • Female, actual: 21%

  13. How to put on a sock • Brand-new socks are rolled up • To put it on the banana, place it over the tip and roll it downward • Pro-tip: if it won’t unroll, you’re doing it backwards • Flip the sock over • It should roll easily

  14. Roll the sock to the base of the banana • Otherwise, the sock could slip off. • …And then your banana juice would spill EVERYWHERE.

  15. Always leave a little room at the tip • If you squeeze the banana and any juice comes out, it needs to have somewhere to go.

  16. NEVER DOUBLE WRAP YOUR BANANA • The two socks will rub against one another, and the friction will create holes • Banana juice could leak out, and we don’t want THAT!

  17. NEVER PUT BABY OIL ON YOUR SOCKS • Baby oil reduces elasticity (the property of socks that keeps them snug) • Un-snug socks slip off bananas, and break easily 

  18. NEVER REUSE THE SOCK • Some people take the sock off, rinse it out in the sink, and then save it for later. • BAD IDEA: socks are notoriously difficult to clean and easily stretched out. • DON’T BE CHEAP: socks only cost a couple of bucks for a pack of six.

  19. Why is this such a big deal? • The average banana plant takes 18 YEARS to grow from a sapling into an adult tree, and costs its gardeners over $200,000. • Seriously.

  20. Don’t flush socks down the toilet. • Toilets were designed for poo, not socks. • They’ll clog, and it will be very awkward to explain to your parents.

  21. GP2: Situation Practice • Your BFF, Niamilika, used to take oral contraceptives (the pill) but wants to stop using them. She always forgets to take the pill on time, since she’s so busy playing varsity softball and soccer. Instead, she’s going to use the calendar method (rhythm method). • Why is this a really bad idea? • What do you advise her to do?

  22. GP2: Situation Practice • Jason and Ashley are shopping for condoms together. Jason is really worried about Ashley getting pregnant, and wants the most effective condoms possible. So, he picks out some condoms that come pre-lubricated with spermicide. • Good thing Ashley was paying attention in biology class! She tells Jason that it’s a much better idea to buy their own spermicide, and apply it themselves. Why?

  23. GP2: Situation Practice • Corian and Markesha have decided that they will have sex for the first time this weekend. Both of them are pretty nervous. Markesha heard that condoms are very effective when used properly, but neither of them know exactly what to do. • How should Corian put the condom on? Be specific!

  24. GP2: Situation Practice • Zayshawn and Nicole practiced coitus interruptus (pull-out method)… and Nicole got pregnant. Zayshawn’s best friend, Nick, doesn’t want that to happen to him. So Nick is trying to convince his girlfriend, Eve, go to on oral contraceptives (the pill). But Eve is really worried about the side-effects. • Why did Zayshawn and Nicole make a poor choice? • What should Nick tell Eve about the side-effects of oral contraceptives, to help her make her choice?
