  3. On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Use serif typeface--Courier New • Use 10- to 12-point fonts • Do not use italics, underlining, open bullets, or graphic lines • Use ample white space • Use all-cotton paper, preferably white • Print on one side of the paper • Do not fold the résumé

On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Position your name as the first readable line on each page • Prepare a keyword summary • Capitalize the first word of each item and end with a period • Prioritize your lists to position your most important qualifications first • Maximize the use of industry jargon

On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Don’ts • Do not use postal abbreviations within the résumé to indicate location--spell out names of states • Do not abbreviate words • Do not use capital letters when listing your major unless it is English, French, or such • Do not include an average or below average GPA

On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Keyword Summary • Provides brief abstract of qualifications • Completed after the remainder of the résumé is complete • Use nouns in priority order to describe qualifications • Begin a capital letter and end with a period • Example: Bachelor of Business Administration. Accounting. Productive work habits. Dean’s list.

On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Career or Job Objective • Most employers like to see an objective • An opportunity to attract favorable attention • List short-term and long-term objectives • Hint at your desire to benefit the employer • Example: To obtain a summer internship in accounting to better prepare myself for a professional career.

On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Education • Follow the keyword summary with either education or experience--your strongest qualification. • Use reverse chronological order to list names and location of each college attended and dates of attendance. • Example:University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming, Bachelor of Business Administration, Major in accounting, June 1997.

  10. On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Experience • Most interviews are granted based on the quality of work experience. • Use action verbs to clearly describe the abilities that you can bring to a new position. • Use either chronological or functional order for listing your experience.

On-Line & Scannable Résumés • Example: Night Manager, Holiday Motel, De Kalb, Illinois, 1996 to present Responsibilities: Supervised four employees; greeted and registered guests; maintained accounting and guest records. Achievements: Learned to work effectively with people; gained skill in meeting difficult customer needs; developed new guest accounting records.

  12. Once the text version is done: • Open PowerPoint • Use copy and paste to complete the various portions of the e-résumé • Include a new slide for each major element • Contact Information—opening slide • Education • Experience

  13. Once the text version is done: • Include as many slides as required to communicate your qualifications • Save the PowerPoint slides when finished • Use “Save as Web Page” to translate the PowerPoint slides into a frames version of your résumé for posting on the Internet
