  3. Personality Questions • What is the difference between introvert and extrovert people? • Would you say that you were introvert or extrovert?

  4. Genetic Influence • Studying the personality traits in other species. • Studying the temperament of infants and children. • Doing heritability studies of twins and adopted children

  5. Genetic Examples Twins separated at birth, James Springer and James Lewis Have shocking similarities. They both grew up not knowing of each other yet both took careers in law enforcement and both had abilities in mechanical drawing and carpentry.

  6. Environmental Influence • Situations • Influence which aspects of our personalities we express • Parents • Modify and shape our temperament and genetic predispositions. It affects our attitudes and self concepts • Peers • Influence our values, behavior, ambitions, goals, etc.

  7. Environment Examples • Everyone is an example of environmental influences on personality. • Peer pressure • Acting differently between parents and friends.

  8. Cultural Influence • Who Are You? • Individualist & Collectivist Culture • Cultural norms specify which traits are valued, affect basic notions of the self and personality, and shape behaviors from aggressiveness to altruism.

  9. Cultural Influences • Japanese schools are very different from American schools. They go 6 days a week and they where uniforms. Most American schools go to 5 days a week and have a dress code.
