  3. “Question” Defined • “a sentence in an interrogative form, addressed to someone in order to get information in reply.” • Dictionary.com

  4. ??Questions?? • Many notable questions in the Scriptures! • Some were seeking an honest answer! • Some questions were asked to entrap! • Many people today ask honest questions! • But, many seek to entrap the one being questioned? • It is good to ask questions, in order to find out the information that is needed!

Dishonest Questions Posed to Jesus! • “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” • Luke 10:25 • “Who is my neighbor?” • Luke 10:29 • “Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?” • Matthew 22:17 • “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?” • Matthew 19:3 • “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?” • Matthew 22:36 • “By what authority does thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?” • Matthew 21:32

Bible Commands on Questions • “But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.” • 2 Timothy 2:23 • “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” • 1 Peter 3:15

Insurance Company Questionnaire • Insurance company recently contacted us regarding a “Church Supplemental Questionnaire.” • The questions asked give a picture of how churches are viewed? • A warped & ignorant view of the work of the church! • Many churches could not answer as we did! • Because they are involved in things not authorized: • Social Gospel gimmicks such as providing: • Food • Fun • Entertainment • Counseling • Group therapy sessions “By what authority doest…these things?” Matt. 21:23

The Church QuestionnaireGeneral Information • With what denomination is the church affiliated? • Answer: Christ built HIS church - Matt. 16:18 • Are there any cooking facilities? • How frequently are they used? • Answer: If any man is hungry, eat at home - 1 Cor. 11:34 • Is there a church gymnasium? • Answer: To exercise our minds to please God - Acts 24:16 • Is the church occupied by a daycare or preschool? • Answer: Such care is a responsibility of parents - Titus 2:1-8 • Is the building occupied by a elementary or secondary school (grades K-12)? • Answer: Parents are to teach their children - 2 Tim. 1:5 • Is the church leased or rented to outside organizations for activities? • Answer: Building used for teaching God’s word - Col. 3:17

The Church QuestionnaireChurch Activities • List and describe all fund raising activities for the last 12 months. • Answer: Lay by in store each first day of the week! • 1 Cor. 16:1-2 • Are there any church sponsored athletic activities? • Answer: Exercise our minds - 1 Tim. 4:7-8 • Does the church operate a camp or day camp (other than sending children to a camp operated by others)? • Answer: Liberal practices follow Lot’s example - Gen. 13:12

The Church QuestionnaireChurch Vehicles • Does the church own or lease any buses or vans? • Answer: NO “chariot ministries” then NO “bus ministries”! • Acts 8:27-34 • If yes, for what purpose are they used? • Are any of these vehicles 15 passenger vans? • How are vehicles maintained? • Are motor vehicle reports checked for drivers? • Describe any driver screening requirements or driver training activities.

The Church QuestionnaireOptional Coverages • Is counseling professional Liability Coverages desired? • Answer: God’s word is our counselor! • Acts 20:27; Psa. 1:1; Prov. 12:15 • Is alcohol or drug abuse counseling done? • Answer: 119:24; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Prov. 23:29-35 • Are group therapy sessions held? • Answer: Worship, Bible study, prayer - Acts 20:7; 1 Tim. 4:13 • Is this counseling advertised or promoted to individuals outside of the church congregation? • Answer: Our front sign & our web page • Have there been any reported claims of incidents? • Answer: Luke 17:29; 1 Thess. 1:8; 2 Peter 3:9-10

The Work of the Church is Not… Matthew 7:21-23 21. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22. “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23. “And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (NKJV) • To provide: • Entertainment! • Amusement! • Secular Education! • Day Care! • Counseling! • Recreation! • Social Activities! • “Programs”! • Young People Programs • “Bus ministries” • ___________ “ministries” 1 Cor. 10:1-7; Ex. 32:1-9; 1 Cor. 11:17-34; Rom. 14:17; Mk. 11:15-18

  16. Hello Everyone, The West Oakland Church of Christ is pleased to host the first annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament. This exciting tournament set to take place on Sunday, July 3rd and Monday, July 4th. We are excited for the opportunity to host such a tournament and we hope that you can participate. Church • Evangelism – Preaching to the Lost! • Matt. 28:19-10; Mk. 16:15-16; Jn. 15:16 • Edification – Building knowledge in the faith! • Eph. 4:11-16, 29; 1 Cor. 14:126; 2 Tim. 2:1-2 • Benevolence – Aid to only saints in need! • Acts 2:44-45; 4:34-35; 11:27-30; Rom. 15:25-31 • Discipline – Correcting members out of order! • 2 Tim. 4:1-4; 1 Cor. 5:1-13; 2 Thess. 3:6; Rom. 16:17

Galatians 6:10 • “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” • This passage is used and abused by liberals to justify the social gospel and support of human institutions! • Context is INDIVIDUAL responsibilities and actions of Christians to the good of the soul, not the flesh! • “Ye which are spiritual” – vs.1 • “Bear ye one another’s burdens” – vs. 2 • “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.”– vs. 4 • “Prove his own work” – vs. 4 • “he that soweth to the Spirit” - uses “us” and “we” – vss. 7-9 • Refer to our bulletin – September-October 2006 issue! • Two excellent articles on Galatians 6:10

  21. Conclusion • The world has a twisted and warped view of the work of the church! • Viewed by the world as a social entertainment organization with a mix of religion! • The Work of the N. T. Church is ONLY: • Evangelism – Teaching the gospel to the lost! • Edification – Teaching & strengthening the faith of the saved! • Benevolence – Aiding needy saints ONLY! • Discipline – Rebuke and correction of wayward brethren!

Conclusion • Questions: • Where is the scriptural authority for the church preaching the gospel through an organization other than the local church? • Where is the scriptural authority for any church doing its benevolent work through any organization other than the local church? • If one work of the church can be done through another organization, why can't all of them be? • Were these works done in the days of the apostles? • What organization other than the local church did they employ to do these works? What was its name? Where was it located? • Let us strive to please the Lord and do all things by His authority! – Col. 3:17
