  3. Map • Fertile plains are the same as steppes. • The mountain plateaus are the Carpathian Mountain.

  4. Kiev City Kiev is the largest city and it is the capital of Ukraine. Kiev has a port on the Dnieper River.

  5. The Ukrainian flag The Ukraine flag is blue and yellow. Blue stands for the sky. Yellow stands for wheat, the main source for Ukraine.

  6. Language • Ukrainian is the official language. • It is a Slavic language with a Cyrillic alphabet of 33 letters. • Russian was also an official language during the Soviet period, and it is still widely spoken by the ethnic Russians. • More than half the people can speak two languages.

  7. Money The Ukraine money is Hryvnya. They just started using this type of money in 1996.

  8. Traditional Costumes On holidays people wear traditional costumes to perform dances and songs.

  9. Clothing Professional men wear suits and hats. Women wear skirts and dresses. In the winter they wear sweaters, coats, and scarves on their heads.

  10. Eating and food • Borsch is the most popular dish in Ukraine (beet root vegetable soup). • The most popular dishes are made out of cereal grains and flour pastes.

  16. Flora • Two percent of the land is used for crops. • Most of Ukraine is flat. • This is Ukraine’s flower: SUNFLOWER.

  17. Landmarks • Ukraine’s longest river is the Dnieper River. • The Pripet Marshes are the largest swamps in Europe.

  18. Scenes of river and mountains • Most of Ukraine consist of fertile plains (steppes) and plateaus. • Mountains are found only in the west (the Carpathians), and in the Crimean Peninsula in the south.

  19. Animals Animals include deer, wolves , bears , foxes , wildcats , beavers , weasels , and badgers.

  20. Schools and Children. • At school some kids play chess, soccer, and ice hockey. The most popular game is soccer.

  21. Schools • School begins on September 1st and starts at 8 am sharp. Students go to school by foot, bus, or even train.

  22. Military • Men between the ages of 18-24 are required to serve in the military. • Sichovi Kozakiwere Ukrainian National Soldiers in the early 1900s.
