Objectives: • 4.1 • Name 3 major factors that can contribute to the degree of risk you encounter while driving. • Name the 4 steps of the IPDE Process. • List the 5 rules of the Smith System. • 4.2 • Explain the structure of the Zone Control System. • Describe an orderly visual search pattern. • 4.3 • Name 3 decisions you must make when applying the IPDE Process. • Describe 3 different lane positions available to you within your lane. • Explain what is meant when you minimize or separate a hazard or compromise space. • List 3 important actions you can take to avoid conflict.   2. 3 Major Risk Factors Risk factors can be contributed by: • The driver 2. The roadway & environment 3. The vehicle Examples: adjusting radio, being angry, using cell phone, texting Examples: bright sun, construction, snow & ice, curve Examples: bald tires, dirty windshield, poor brakes

  6. Smith System- gives you rules to help you learn how to look at traffic situations • Aim high in steering • Get the big picture • Keep your eyes moving • Leave yourself an “out” • Make sure others see you.

  8. # 1 Orderly visual search pattern- a process of searching critical areas in a regular sequence How are you going to look, search or IDENTIFY?

How are you going to look, search or IDENTIFY? # 2 Clues –look for: 1. other users - ex: movement of others, pedestrians or bicyclists, develop habit of ground viewing 2. roadway features and conditions – ex: multilane to single lane, roadway surface, road hazards 3. traffic controls– ex: signs, traffic signals, police officers

  10. IPDE Predict • Actions of others • Control of your vehicle and possible consequences

  11. Decide IPDE • It is a mental task • Very important • Examples: maintain speed, change direction, communicate to others, or a combination of these • Note lane positions on page 76

  12. Execute IPDE • Carrying out a decision to avoid conflict • Actions to execute include: controlling speed, steering, and communication

  13. To help maintain safe path use the following techniques • Minimize a hazard • Put more distance between yourself & the hazard • Separate Hazards • Adjust speed to deal with one hazard at a time • Compromise Space • Give as much space as possible to the greater hazard

  14. Many crashes can be avoided if a driver simply ???? Communicates!!!!

  15. How can you communicate while driving… • Headlights • Taillights • Brake lights • Turn signals • Hazard flashers • Back-up lights • Horn • Vehicle position • Eye contact & body movement • Combination of actions
