  3. Case Study • Junior at Tunkhannock High School (Wyoming County, PA) has cell phone confiscated and principal views nude images. • ACLU of PA files lawsuit against the school and Wyoming County law enforcement officials for violations against student’s first and fourth amendment rights.

  4. Issues • School Policies on cell phones • Confiscated phones/school discretion to access cell content • Legal battles between parents and schools • Lack of Legislation/protecting right to privacy with ICT technology

  5. Areas of Immediate Focus • Enacting/implementing legislation that supports privacy rights with ICT tools • School policies / level of authority with confiscated phones • Improved technology for ALL cell phone models with enhanced security features

  6. Short Run Solutions • Be smarter —research phone options with security features that are screen password accessible -- Remove Sims card or phone battery

  7. Looking Ahead • ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) of PA is active with a PA lawsuit and feels cell privacy is important. • Parents need to PRESSURE schools NOT to violate privacy rights. • Students need to be better EDUCATED with cell content consequences.
