3. Classroom Expectations • Welcome to class (introduction) • Objective: I am here to teach; you are here to learn. I will do my job; you will do yours, and we will together use this year wisely and beneficially. • Positive attitude is the key to success. Let’s keep it all the time. 5. Public Speaking 1 • This course is designed to build important communication skills that will enhance all aspects of an individual’s life. • Students will learn how to acquire, analyze, and evaluate information in order to organize effect speeches, presentations, and other forms of public speaking. • Topics to be covered include: Types of Speeches, Topic Selection, Research, Speech Construction, Presentation, Debate, Careers, and much, much, more. 7. Why Do We Have Procedures? • A procedure is the way that we do things. • To do things right, we have to follow some simple procedures, for example: • To open your locker, you have to select your combination as directed by the lock manufacturer. • To cook a delicious meal, you need to follow the steps in the recipe. • To place a call on your phone, you need to dial the number in the right order. • So, to be successful in learning, you need to follow some simple procedures. 9. Entrance • Enter the classroom quietly. You are to enter the classroom without screaming, running or otherwise causing a ruckus. Students who are not following directions will be asked to leave the room and reenter when in compliance. • Make sure you have followed the school’s dress code policy. • Make sure all snacks (treats) and gum are put away. Eating and/or drinking is not permissible in the learning environment. • Make sure you have all necessary materials for the class. • Sharpen pencils if needed (sharper is behind the door) • Submit homework (if assigned) • Go directly to your assigned seat. 10. Right After the Bell Rings • Immediately start the bellwork that will be written on the overhead/monitor. • Do the bellwork in your journal. Always write the bellwork question. • When you finish, wait quietly for directions. "There is a brilliant child locked inside every student." Marva Collins

11. Tardies • Any student who is not inside the classroom when the tardy bell rings is considered tardy and must report to the Tardy Room (TOR). • It is your responsibility to be in class on time. "There is a brilliant child locked inside every student." Marva Collins

12. Mr. Smith’s Class Materials • Students are allowed to borrow pencils/pens located next to the front door (please return at the end of the period). • If students need 2 to 3 sheets of looseleaf paper, please feel free to get materials from the trays located at the computer center. • Do not touch any materials/supplies on Mr. Smith’s podium or desk. 13. Keeping Your Journal • Your Education for Careers journal will be used only for this class (3 prong pocket folder is recommended.) • Use pen or pencil to write in your journal. • Write your name, class period, and teacher name on it. • Always write the titles with capital letters. • Each day, put the date first. • Keep your journal clean and organized. • Your journal will be collected and checked from time to time. 14. During Instruction • Listen to the teacher with full attention. • No pencil sharpening, talking, or whispering. • Ask permission to speak by raising your hand. • Ask questions related to the subject. Other questions which are not related to the subject can be asked after instruction. • After instruction, make sure you understand the concept. 15. While You are Working • Make sure you read or listen to the directions about your work and understand them. • If you didn’t understand, ask help from other students sitting around you. If they also don’t understand, ask the teacher to explain it. • If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and offer your best. • Talking to each other should be no louder than a whisper. The person sitting on the other side of the room should not be interrupted by your noise. • Respect each other and be friendly. • Use your time wisely. 16. If the Teacher raises his hand • STOPwhatever you are doing at that moment. • Face the teacher and wait silently. • Notify any classmates who haven’t noticed that the teacher has raised his hand. • No talking or whispering. 17. After you have completed your assignment • Check your work and the directions one more time to see if you missed anything or did something incorrectly. • Turn your paper over, place it on the left side of your desk, place your pen/pencil on top of your assignment and wait for collection procedures. • Start your reading session. 18. Homework Procedure • You will be given homework. Your homework assignment will be placed on the right side of the chalkboard. Homework is due as soon as you enter the classroom. 19. When You Enter with an Excused Tardy • When you enter the room late (with an excuse from a person of authority) you need not disturb the class. • Hand me your excuse and go quietly to your assigned seat. • Pass a note to your classmate to find out what the class is working on. • ***Any student who is not inside the classroom when the tardy bell rings is considered tardy and must report to the Tardy Room. 20. When you are Absent • Find your class folder in the missed assignment tray, collect your assignment. The assignment’s due date will be placed on top of the assignment. • If you missed an assignment because of an authorizedabsence, inform Mr. Smith to make arrangements. (You have2 daysto make arrangements with Mr. Smith to make-up work.) • You will not be able to make up any work if you have an unexcused absence. 21. ClassroomRules • Have all appropriate materials and supplies at your desk/table and be seated when the bell rings. • Respect the people, equipment, and furnishings of Room E-409. • Adjust your voice level to suit the activity. • Follow directions the first time they are given. • Observe all rules in the student planner and EBR’s handbook. 25. Dismissal • When instructed to do so, clean your work area and take all garbage to the trash can. (If 7th period, you will pack up before the end of the day reading.) • The ringing of the bell tells the teacher it is time to dismiss.
