  1. Theme /Topic : SOUND WAVE WEEK OF OCTOBER 20 – 24, 2014 MRS. MARITES L. DE LUNA

  2. QUICK QUESTIONS : WEDNESDAY • 1. Sound waves are ________ type of waves. • 2. Light waves are __________ type of waves. • 3. Light is the only wave we can see in the electromagnetic spectrum. (T/F) • 4. All waves transmit ____________. • 5. _________ is our main source of energy.

  3. Targets / Goals for the Week : ES 6.P.1.3 • By the end of the week, I can : • Review what sound is • Tell the relationship between sound and vibration. • Tell how sound travels through various mediums. • State the basic functions of the ear and how it relates to sound and hearing • Perform activities about sound through learning centers

  4. Important Links for the Week : Sound • http://www.ck12.org/book/CK-12-Physical-Science-For-Middle-School/r1/section/19.0/ • http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/464cfbc6-375a-4d89-837f-3079b653e6c9 • http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/1a5cf3c0-5b3f-4866-8651-e294add8d23c

  5. Homework : Week of October 20 – 24, 2014 • 1. What is sound? How do we hear sound? • 2. Explain how sound travels. • 3. What is a medium? In which medium does sound travel fastest and why? • 4. Draw the structure of the human ear, label the parts and tell the function of each part.

  6. Vocabulary Word : Monday : Medium • A medium- is an object that has something flowing through it. For sound it could be water, air or even solid like a wall. • Sentence – Sound waves need a medium to travel.

  7. Vocabulary Word : Wednesday : Vocal Cord • Vocal Cord is the structure in the human throat that vibrates to produce sound / voice

  8. Vocabulary Word : Thursday : Ear • The ear is the organ that detects sound. It not only receives sound, but also aids in balance and body position. • http://www.ck12.org/book/CK-12-Physical-Science-For-Middle-School/r1/section/19.2/

  9. WHAT SOUND? : STORY-TELLING TIME! INCREASING SCIENCE LITERACY : FOCUS ON LISTENING SKILLS

  10. New Concept : Thursday • Something can be "heard" when sound waves from it enter the ear. Sound is a form of energy that is caused when vibrating materials produce waves that move through matter.

  11. The Big Idea Reading Strategy : Increasing Literacy (Reading, Listening, Speaking & Writing) • The article that you are about to read will be related to the GLOBAL health issue that scares millions of people all over the world. • When you are done reading with your partner, please make sure to discuss this question as part of your BIG IDEA : How is this issue related to the EBOLA VIRUS?

  12. Monday-Friday Review : Transverse and Longitudinal Waves • We are to modify the steps that we made last week on WAVES. • We are to list 4 steps for longitudinal. • We are to list 4 steps for transverse. • We are to combine these steps to produce a class dance/movement on waves.

  13. Learning Centers for the Week : Sound • Sounds in a Liquid • Sounds through a Solid • Paper cup telephone • Transverse and Longitudinal – slinky toy • I-pad activity on sound (science techbook)

  14. New Concept : Monday • Sound travels in waves • Sound vibrations are the result of disturbances that cause vibrations. • Sound waves are affected by the mediums through which they travel • The structure of the human ear and its connection to our brain allows us to hear certain wavelengths

  15. NCFE question : WEDNESday • Through which medium does sound travel the fastest? • a. air • b. steel • c. steam • d. water

  16. New Concept : Wednesday • The form of the human ear can receive sound waves as vibrations and convert them to signals that are processed by the brain. Sound travels through different materials. It travels fastest in a solid and slowest in a gas. The ear is the structure that enables us to hear sounds

  17. New concept : Friday HOW DO WE HEAR? • SOUND WAVES enter the ear canal and cause the eardrum to vibrate. • VIBRATIONS pass through 3 connected bones in the middle ear • This motion SETS FLUID MOVING in the inner ear. • Moving fluid bends thousands of delicate hair-like cells which convert the vibrations into NERVE IMPULSES. • Nerve impulses are CARRIED to the brain by the auditory nerve • In the brain, these impulses are CONVERTED into what we "hear" as sound.
