This study examines the impact of a mutated B16:alanine insulin transgene on NOD mice, showing that a knockout of the native insulin gene has significant effects on insulitis development. The findings, presented in Nakayama et al. (2005), highlight the critical role a specific insulin epitope plays in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes, suggesting potential pathways for genetic and therapeutic interventions in autoimmune diabetes.
