  2. Needs Assessment: • In print media, many times the finished product is not what is intended due to problems with material that has been submitted to a printer. These problems include wrong color format, wrong photo resolution, or wrong choice of fonts.

  3. Needs Assessment: (Continued) • When materials are not properly prepared for a printer, the printer is forced to make the necessary adjustments to complete a job. These adjustment may include converting images and/or fonts; but, they are not trained to make the proper and necessary changes. This lack of skill results in a poor finished product.

  4. Needs Assessment:(Continued) • It is a designer’s job to properly deliver their work in such a manner which requires no adjustments. This training module will address the issue of proper material preparation. It will reinforce the learner’s design foundations involving photo resolution and color, along with font protocol.

  5. Instructional Goal: • After completing the training, the learner will be able to determine the proper use of a photo’s color and resolution; and determine proper font format, type and color to be used in different print media.

  6. Performance Objectives: After completing this training, learners will be able to: • Given photos and kind of print media (CN), the learner will incorporate them into a project (B), using proper photo color and resolution (CR). • Given headlines and body text (CN), the learner will incorporate them into a project (B), using appropriate font usage (CR). • Given photos and copy (CN), the learner will incorporate them into a project (CN), using appropriate selection of color, resolution and font type(s) (CR).

  7. Assessment of Learning Outcomes:

  8. Learner Characteristics: • The target audience for this training module is graphic designers of any gender and any ethnicity. The age targeted would be about 21 and over, holding an associate’s or bachelor’s degree within a graphics field. • The audience should already know how to design and create materials such as ads, brochures, etc. They should already possess the basic foundations involving photo resolution and color, along with font protocol. • They need to be familiar with design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and/or Adobe InDesign.

  9. Learning Context: • Designers will have access to this training module at work or at home. At work, it can be accessed during any free time, if possible, or perhaps time that is set aside specifically for training purpose. At home, it can be accessed at any time. • The benefit of the module is that it can be used at either place for reference, if needed. One can consult the module if any question should arise, or it can just be used to “refresh” their knowledge.

Instructional Strategies: • Introduction: The training module is intended to help maximize the print quality of photos and fonts in different print medias. • Photos (a) Describing different photo color schemes: RGB, CMYK, Black and White (b) Describing photo resolution and determining the proper resolution for different print medias. • Fonts (a) Describing different font formats: PostScript (Type1), TrueType, OpenType (b) Describing different type fonts: Serif, Sans Serif

Instructional Strategies: (Continued) (c) Font protocol: Describing appropriate usage of font types and appropriate color usage of fonts for greater readability. • Assessment A small project will be given where photos and text are provided. The learner will take the given materials and lay them out using their own creativity. The material will need to be properly prepared, ready to be delivered to a printer.

Formative Evaluation: • Subject Matter Expert: The training module will be given to a graphic designer who is knowledgeable of the module’s content, as well as fluent in the required software necessary for the development of the training’s project. • Peer Evaluation: The training module will be reviewed by a graphic designer who attains the experience with the module’s content. The designer will be able to critique the module so modifications can be made where necessary.

  15. Summary • The training module is intended to help maximize the print quality of photos and fonts in different print medias. It will reinforce a graphic designer’s foundations involving photo resolution and color, along with font protocol.
