  3. Motto “I have made the choices that work best for me. I know I cannot please everyone, and that's fine.” --Marlee Matlin This quote shows that even Deaf people set out to achieve happiness for themselves.

  4. Flag This flag represents the Deaf culture and the father of sign William Stokoe. The ‘S’ stands for Stokoe. The sun stands for the impact a Deaf person can make on the world. The pink and black stand for the fact that everybody is different.

  5. Mayor Jeffery “Jeff” Float Jeffery is known for being an Olympic swimmer, and being the only US Deaf athlete to win an Olympic Medal.

  6. Tree Leclerc Cherry Blossom Tree Named after Katie Leclerc, a famous Deaf actress known for her role in Switched at Birth.

  7. Flower Trix Carnation Named after Trix Bruce, A Deaf one woman show artist.

  9. Building Names • Cogswell High School: Named after the young deaf girl who inspired Thomas Gallaudet to teach the Deaf. • Clerc Library: Named after Laurent Clerc. He and Gallaudet created the first school for the deaf. • Foster Bank: Named after Andrew Foster, who was the first African-American to graduate from Gallaudet. • Buckley Post Office: Named after Dr. Gerard Buckley, The first president of the National Technical Institute for the deaf. • Barreca Grocery: Named after Michael Barreca, a deaf actor who played Dummy Hoy in Signs of Time.
