Background Of Joseph John Thomson • Born in Cheetham Hill Manchester on December 18th 1856 • Dad won the Nobel Prize for Physics. • Married Rose Elisabeth • Had a daughter and son, the son won the Nobel Prize for Physics. • Father died when he was sixteen • Enrolled at Owens College, Manchester 1870. • Applied for scholarship at Trinity College in 1880. • Graduated at Cambridge. • Lecturer at Trinity for the rest of his life. • Died August 30th 1940
Accomplishments • Nobel Prize for Physics 1906 • Royal Medal 1894 • Hughes Medal in 1902 • Elliot Cresson Medal in 1910 • Copley Medal in 1914 • Franklin Medal in 1922
The Experiments that led to the discoveries. • He discovered Electrons, Isotopes and created the mass of a spectrometer. • Discovered the natural radioactivity of potassium in 1905. • Demonstrated Hydrogen has one electron per atom.
Experimental Data • Does your scientist’s model of the atom fit with experimental data? • No, because no one believed that atoms could be broken down. • Everyone thought that the atom was the ultimate particle.
The Atomic Structure • He proved that atoms were divisible and showed that atoms were made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons. • He discovered a method for separating different kinds of atoms and molecules by the use of negative rays.
