Autobiography. • Born on June 28, 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland. • Catholic when young, converted to Calvinism. • Raised by aunt and uncle. • At age 16, moved to Paris in 1742 and earned his living working as everything from footman, to assistant, to ambassador. • Interests: Political philosophy, music, education, literature, autobiography • Wrote a play and two operas, and made important contributions to music • Was a musician before becoming a philosopher. • Wrote 2 important books: The Social Contract and Emile. • Considered a forebear of modern socialism and communism. • Died in 1778 in Ermenonville, France.

Ideology and its Importance. • Wrote “The Social Contract” which describes that men work best with conformed society • He thought that the government’s role is to provide freedom, equality, and justice, regardless of what the majority thought. • Notable ideas: General will, amour-propre, moral simplicity of humanity, child-centered learning, civil religion, popular sovereignty, positive liberty. • His ideas influenced the French Revolution and the development of modern political and educational thought. • His theory would serve as one of the basis of modern democracy.
