The Snowy River Hydro Scheme: A Key Element of Nation Building

The Snowy River Hydro Scheme, completed in 1974 after 25 years of construction, exemplifies nation building by shaping Australia's national identity through infrastructure. This complex project collects and stores water, diverting it through tunnels and power stations to supply irrigation to the Murray River. Over 100,000 workers from 30 countries contributed to this monumental effort, which not only generated hydroelectric power but also spurred industrial growth and preserved the environment. The scheme demonstrates the intricate relationship between natural resources and national development.

  1. Snowy River Hydro By Chloe Alexander and Shauna Alen.

  2. Nation Building. • Nation Building is a process of constructing a national identity. The development of national myths and national public holidays can be included in nation building, as well as major infrastructure development, such as roads, dams and railways.

  3. An example of nation building is..

  4. Snowy River Hydro The construction of the Snowy River Hydro Scheme. The Scheme collets and stores water that would normally flow east to the coast and flows through tunnels and power stations. The water is then let out into the Murray for irrigation. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is one of the most complex integrated water and hydro-electric power schemes in the world.

  5. The Scheme took 25 years to build and was completed in 1974. More than 100,00 people from over 30 countries came to work at the mountains .

  6. Relationships to the Natural environment. The builders used the land as a recourse as the were using the water to make electricity. They also cleared the land for industry growth and new rivers were made for the water to be released into other areas. Nation Building projects such as Snowy River Hydro scheme use the environment to open up jobs for people, such as poets (the poem Man from Snowy River).
