  1. Computer Lab Proposal February 26th, 2008

  2. Agenda • The Problem-Not enough lab time • Different needs = Different requirements • Weekly Schedule vs. Project Capability • Maximizing Availability • TTL into GLC • Sharing Space • A Flexible Solution- Weekly AND Projects • Example schedules • Using iCal to help • Making it Work • Questions

  3. Creating “a routine” helps planning Sets student expectations Keeps skills “fresh” Facilitates Volunteers < 1 hour consistent with attention span Project activities often need > 1 hour Projects over multiple weeks are inefficient Startup overhead uses much of the time Lab Scheduling Dilemma Schedule for Best Use Weekly Schedule Block Time Schedule Doing Projects within our Weekly Schedule has created problems: - Classes bumped for Projects Sense is the Upper Grade Projects have Priority (shouldn’t be) - Lab not used used to its maximum (classes cancelled) Many teachers don’t even try projects- too hard to schedule

  4. Step 1: Maximizing Availability • Type To Learn to GLC • Improve GLC computers for TTL • Increases Lab to 24 slots of ~ 1 hour each (29 @ 45 mins) • Other consideration: improve GLC computers for other tasks • Create mini-network for printing and saving using TSTA support resource • Maximize “Sharing” • With divider we have 2 labs • One with 20 + teacher station + projector • Second with 17 (can include RD if desired) • When students can : “share the computer” • Smaller classes or 1/2 classes with other activity (Library, SSR) A few more computers next year = 2 full Primary Labs= ~40 slots/week

  5. Flexible Schedule Fixed Slots and Projects • Regular Slots set for Every Other Week. • Should accommodate all who want a fixed slot + • In between weeks available for projects or activities that need > 1 hour. (FCFS+*) • Identify Project or activity for project week • Not for enforcement Collect ideas to spread • If Project Week time is open; can be scheduled as “non-project slot” by anyone • On Friday before Project Week-FCFS * First Come First Served Plus adds priority for who hasn’t used lab

  6. Regular Slot Calendar Example 24 slots per week (9 post-lunch); can use 45 mins for more (13 post-lunch) Cancellations will create openings for extra time (opportunistic) Sharing can create even more extra time if only need 17 computers

  7. Possible Project Week Calendar For this example:12 Classes have projects (including some sharing) Slots still available: • All-day Friday plus scattered around • Room 3 already took a slot available for regular time

  8. iCal should help • You can subscribe to the Computer Lab Calendar via iCal • Will show openings and scheduled time • Plan your projects based on what is available • Request for time is based on what is open = success • See Cheryl, Stuart or Charron if you need help to add it to your iCal iCal Address webcal://ical.mac.com/gardengateschool/Comp%20Lab%20Openings.ics

  9. Making it Work • Try it for rest of this year- then evaluate • Prepare students in classroom to maximize lab usage. • Cancel if you know you won’t be using the lab • Share when you can: • Split class between 2 activities; e.g. research and lab • Pairs on computers for projects when possible Bottom Line : Make the most of our Computer Lab for all of our students
