  8. Question: How do they function in ASL? • Answer: • Classifiers are hand shapes that REPRESENT a GROUP of nouns (people, place, things). • They CAN function as Pronouns. (takes the place of a thing’s name…”it”, “he”, “she”) or…..

  9. More functions of CL: 1ST PER STOPPED HERE • Classifiers can also function as an Adjective • (describing size shape, depth, texture) • or • an Adverb • (showing HOW an action took place).

  10. Since CL: represent a GROUP of people or things; • you MUST first tell people WHICH person, place or thing from the GROUP you are talking about. • 4) YOU CAN’T SIGN A CLASSIFIER BY ITSELF.... BECAUSE YOU NEED TO KNOW WHICH THING FROM THE GROUP YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

  11. - CL represents all vehicles(moving on the ground) • Is used to show: • -Ambulance • -tractor • -race car • cars -dump truck -motorcycle or scooter -jeep bus -tram -MAX -train -subway - Boats/ships, etc

  12. Glossing a Classifier has 3 parts. • They must be Glossed and signed in this order: • _____ ______ “____________” • Noun CL “Verb” (write in • English) • ADJ. (gloss) • NOTE: Quotes around a word or words means a gesture or movement is shown.

  13. An Example: • Example: • motorcycle3 -CL“zooms past me” • Noun classifier “verb” • in English, no caps, to show movement • Or • motorcycle3 -CL IX-BLUE • IX- to point at with IndeX finger • ADJECTIVE • Most adjectives have signs
