  1. Jam Writing & Informal Writing

  2. Writing • Students tend to stop writing to edit frequently. • The “English lie” …good writing=good grammar • Good writing=a good idea! • Begin by “Jam writing”.

  3. Jam Writing • Just write! No editing. • Don’t stop writing, even when you’re tired! • Explore your brain and ideas… • Look for a good idea and throw out bad ones. • Nobody will see “Jam writing” except you! “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”—E.M. Forster

  4. Jam Writing: Usage • After you have a good idea, start looking at form. • After form is decided, look at audience. • Write a first draft. • Begin the editing process. • Share your piece with the intended audience.

  5. Informal Writing • Informal Writing (ie. poetry) is for a broad audience. • Formal writing (ie. 5-paragraph essay) is for a small (often 1 person) audience—designed to check your learning. • Informal writing like fiction, drama, and poetry are best created through sharp mental images of people or scenes and have conflict. • Emulate, but don’t imitate your favorite writers. • Dialogue should be fresh and seem real.
