Two Major Sects Sunni Shia Follow Ali and his descendents 15% of all Muslims True Religious leaders (Imams) are infallible Theological issues are decided by the infallible Imam • Follow Abu Bakr and the Caliphs chosen after him • 85% of all Muslims • Leaders (Caliphs) and theological issues decide by consensus

  4. Ongoing Conflict The Sunni and Shia still don’t get along In Iraq each group has attacked the other making it peace in that country harder to achieve Similar difference cause problem in Syria and other Islamic countries
