Beliefs of the catholic church • Geocentric Theory: the earth was center of the universe and the sun, moon, and planets revolved around the earth • -proposed by Greek philosopher Aristotle in 300s BC • -for centuries scholars & the church accepted this belief • Inquisition: • Institution in the Catholic Church charged with removing heretical ideas (ideas against the Church’s teachings) and those who believed them

  4. The scientific method • Truth comes after inquiry – different from past when experimentation was used to prove a commonly held belief • Francis Bacon – stressed experimentation and observation • Rene Descartes: Everything should be doubted until proven by reason

Nicolauscopernicus • The sun, not the earth, was at the center of the solar system • Heliocentric Theory: The earth revolves around the sun • Completely new idea! • Developed mathematical equation of how this process worked • On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres • Teachings contradict the church

  7. Isaac newton • English scientist • The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy • Law of universal gravitation: gravity affects objects in the universe as well as on earth- gravity keeps the planets in their orbit • Developed calculus
