Background • The 50thanniversary celebration of OAU/AU in May 2013 offered African leaders a new opportunity to recommit themselves to create necessaryconditions for the emergence of a new Africa; • To attain this objective, Africa Agenda 2063 was initiated and identification of Africa’s priorities for the post-2015 development agenda; • Africa resolves to re-orient its development paradigm away from externally-driven toward domestically- inspired initiatives ; • This new ambition is expected to help to resolutely address the root causes of poverty, exclusion and inequality;
Background (cont’d) In this regard, it is envisaged to establish a global partnership for statistical capacity building on the Continent to ensure that these new initiatives attain their objectives; Mobilizing all stakeholders and coordination efforts for the implementation of SHaSA and Charter which are key strategic documents remains a challenge because of the lack of a lead institution on the continent; To overcome this shortcoming, the Heads of State decided in January 2013, to establish an AU Institute for Statistics to be based in Tunis, Tunisia; This institute will be at the heart of the African statistical system to ensure proper coordination of statistical activities and to provide effective technical support to African countries for the emergence of quality statistics in Africa.

Need for Strategic Shift Despite enormous efforts invested in Africa over the last decade at national and International levels, the quality of statistics remains a concern; Quality data, comparable in time and space on all African countries are quasi-inexistent; Definitions of statistical concepts and standards vary from one country to another; and from one region to another, making comparison between countries and regions very difficult ; Statistics on emerging issues such as Environment, Intra-African Trade, Migration, etc. necessary for African Integration are not produced; With the Post 2015 Agenda and Africa 2063 Agenda, there is a need for Data Revolution in Africa to ensure better monitoring and accountability for better development outcomes.
Strategic Vision To provide comparable, reliable and timely statistics on regular basis in support of the African integration Agenda and evidence-based for decision-making for full realization of the vision of the African Union
Strategic Mission: To serve as the Reference Centerfor the production of quality Statistics on Africa
