  4. Types of organizations Two types of organizations: • Mechanistic organization • Organic organization

  5. Google Google has grown a lot since it opened in 1998. However, they still maintain a small company feel. At lunchtime, almost everyone eats in the office café, sitting at whatever table has an opening and enjoying conversations with Googlers from different teams.

  6. Google (cont.) Our commitment to innovation depends on everyone being comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. Every employee is a hands-on contributor, and everyone wears several hats. Because we believe that each Googler is an equally important part of our success, no one hesitates to pose questions directly to Larry or Sergey in our weekly all-hands ("TGIF") meetings – or spike a volleyball across the net at a corporate officer.

  7. Informal networks and formal organizational charts Company structures vary in terms of differentiation and integration. Differentiation Integration

Vertical Differentiation Hierarchy defines levels of authority: • Top – CEO, President, Vice Presidents – (Strategic managers in charge of organization). • Middle mgmt – managers are in charge of facilities and departments. – Directors (Tactical level). • Frontline mgrs and workers – office mgrs, sales mgrs, supervisors, etc. and employees that report directly to them. (Operational level).

  9. Span of control • Narrow spans build a tall organization • Wide spans creates a flat organization • Optimal span • Delegation

  10. Decentralization and Decision making Centralized and decentralized organizations

  11. Horizontal Structure - Line departments or units • Staff departments

Functional organizations Advantages: • Economies of sale can be realized. • Monitoring of the environment is more effective. • Performance standards are better maintained. • People have greater opportunity for specialized training and in-depth skill development. • Technical specialists are relatively free of administrative work. • Decision making and lines of communication are simple and clearly understood.

  13. Divisional organizations As functional organizations become less efficient, organizations restructure to create divisional organizations
