  3. What is an interview? • It’s a time for the employer to determine if a candidate is ideal for a given position. • Do you have the abilities and the experience required? • Do your values and habits conform with the those of the company/organisation? • Will you fit in well with other employees?

  4. What is an interview? • It’s a time for the employee to determine if a position is ideal for them. • Why do I want this position? • What do I have to offer that is unique? • What else do I need to know? Remember: the employer needs you as much as you need them!

  6. Getting ready.Congratulations! So you got an interview . . . • When you are called for an interview be sure to confirm the time, place and location. WRITE IT DOWN! • Inquire if there will be a test, an evaluation or a task to complete. • If possible, determine how many interviewers will be present. • Anticipate questions and practice your answers. DO YOUR RESEARCH! • Choose and prepare your clothes ahead of time. • Plan your route ahead of time. BE ON TIME!

  8. Surviving the interview. What to wear . . . • No hats, jeans, t-shirts, or any other worn or inappropriate clothing. Try to find out the dress code of the work place and model it +1. • Be sure your clothes are clean and ironed. • Avoid perfume, cologne or overly scented products.

What to bring . . . • A copy of your resume (one for each interviewer). • A copy of your list of references as well as photocopies of any letters of recommendation you may have. • Paper and a pen to take notes (interviewer names, contact info, future interview dates) OR in case there is a task to complete.

  10. Ask for clarifications when necessary. Ask questions about the position and about the company/organisation. Inquire about the next step in the interview process. Maintain a positive attitude. Surviving the interview. What to do . . . • Greet interviewers warmly. • Shake hands firmly. • Smile. • Establish and maintain eye contact. • Stand until invited to take a seat. • Do not slouch. • Speak clearly.

Take my advice . . . • Be on time (approximately 10 minutes early).‏ • Go alone. • Dress appropriately. • Be well groomed. • Do not chew gum. • Avoid smoking or smelly food before the interview. • Do not discuss personal problems. • Do not discuss salary unless prompted by the interviewer. • Do not loiter. After the interview: smile, shake hands, and leave with grace and purpose.

  13. Common Questions(So practice!)‏ • Tell me about yourself. • What specific/special skills will you bring to the job? • What are your strengths? • What are your weaknesses? • What would you do in x situation? • Describe a situation where you had to solve a problem.

  16. After the interview • Write a note thanking the interviewer. This note is an opportunity to remind them of your qualifications and to reiterate that you are still interested in the position. • Learn from the experience: what do you do well? what could you do better next time? • If the interviewer is meant to get in contact with you, be sure to be available at the appointed time. If you do not hear from them, wait an extra day before contacting them. • If you are supposed to contact the interviewer, be sure to do so in a timely manner.
