  4. 1. Cells • Cells are the basic unit of all living things. • Different cells have different functions. • Examples: blood cells, bone cells and skin cells 1 http://www.manatee.k12.fl.us

  5. EXAMPLES OF CELLS dept.kent.edu/projects/cell/TM2.JPG www.turbosquid.com Blood Cell Muscle Cell Plant Epidermal Cell http://plantpath.ifas.ufl.edu

  6. 2. Tissues • Made up of many cells  (hint! Look for nuclei!) • A group of cells that work together to perform a specific job. • Examples: Blood, piece of muscle, and fat. 2 trc.ucdavis.edu

  7. Examples of Tissue Blood ?! Kidney tissue

  8. 3. Organs • Two or more tissues working together to perform a specific job. • Examples: stomach, intestines, heart 3

  9. Examples of Organs The Heart In a plant: a leaf

  10. Examples of Organs Skin!

  11. 4. Organ Systems • A group of organs working together to perform a specific job. • If one part of the system fails, it has an effect on the whole system. • What would happen if your stomach stopped working? 4

  12. Here are some organ systems you should remember . . .

  13. Skeletal System • What are some of the functions of the skeletal system? • Protection of organs • Storage of minerals • Gives our body shape • Blood cell formation *http://www.stpeters.k12.nf.ca/skel.jpg

  14. Major Organs: Bones

  15. Muscular System • What are some things our muscles do? • Holds you upright • Responsible for movement http://www.criticalbench.com/images/muscular-system.jpg

  17. Cardiovascular System • Pumps blood through the body • Transports materials, like oxygen, to and from the cells • Stops bleeding (platelets) • Fights off pathogens (white blood cells) health.enotes.com

  18. Respiratory System • Allows the body to obtain and use oxygen • It also gets rid of carbon dioxide (CO2) lungdiseases.about.com

  19. The exchange of oxygen between the capillaries and the alveoli

  20. Digestive System • Digests food into small particles to be used by the body. www.teachnet.ie

  22. Nervous System • Controls and coordinates many things in the body. • Collects and processes information. • Responsible for the five senses: taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight www.ama-assn.org

  23. Excretory System: • Gets rid of liquid waste through urination (peeing!) • Major organs: bladder, kidneys, ureters • Reproductive system: I’m sure you know what this does . . .

  24. The last level of organization!

  25. 5. Organism • Anything that can live on its own. • Are made up of at least 1 cell. • Examples: rabbit, bacteria, pine tree 5 www.bunny-rabbits.com
