  2. Naming the Pieces • Stack the black piece on one of the pegs. This is one whole. • Stack the two orange pieces on the peg. The orange pieces are the whole cut into two equal parts. The name of the orange piece is one half. • Stack the green pieces next to the orange. The green pieces are the whole cut into three equal parts. Each green piece is one third. • Place the other colors on the pegs and name the pieces.

  3. Naming the Pieces • What name do we give to two green pieces? Why? • Six yellow? • 5 blue?

  4. Equivalent Fractions • Stack one orange piece on a peg. • Can you find two pieces of another color that will fill as much of the peg as one half does? • Two purple pieces are equivalent to one orange. ½ = 2/4 • Find other fractions that are equivalent to ½. • What are other fractions can you find that are equivalent to each other?

  5. Comparing Fractions • Stack one orange piece on the middle peg. • How many fractions can you find that are greater than one half? • How many fractions can you find that are less than one half?

  6. Adding Fractions • Stack one green piece on a peg. • How many ways can you fill up this peg with pieces to make the sum of 1? • Solve these problems using the fraction stax: + + +
