  1. Welcome to Open House 2017-2018 Michelle Plumer First Grade Teacher .

  2. All About Ms. Plumer • Graduated from Georgia Southern University and have been at Still for four years • Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education • Member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators for two years

  3. *Communication Information* • Daily Red Folders- Allows 2 way communication • Please send all transportation changes/notes in here (this includes after school clubs) ~Daily Reading Log- 20 minutes per night. ~Specials Calendar- Posted on my blog every week! Please make note of PE days (TENNIS SHOES!) • Blue Weekly Work Folder- Student’s graded work from the weeksent home every Thursday! • Please look through work, complete and return any unfinished papers. • Behavior Sheet • Important Information from the Office • Bi-Weekly Newsletter

  5. *Classroom Schedule* • 7:10-7:45 Morning Work/ Attendance/ Morning News • 7:45-8:15 Calendar/ Number Talks • 8:15-9:00 Specials • 9:05-10:05 Math • 10:05-10:30 Daily 5 (Round 1) Reading mini lesson • 10:34-11:04 Lunch • 11:04- 11:10 Bathroom Break • 11:15-11:45 Daily 5 (Round 2) Grammar mini lesson • 11:45-12:15 Writer’s Workshop • 12:20-12:40 Recess • 12:50-1:25 Daily 5 (Round 3) Word Study • 1:25-1:55 S.S./Science/ Health • 2:00-2:35 Pack-up/Dismissal ***No Recess on Friday due to Fun Friday taking place from 1:15-1:45pm, followed by Daily 5 card collection, and teacher read aloud.

  6. Our Class Expectations • Looking eyes and walking feet • Follow directions quickly. • Keep your hands and feet to yourself. • Listen while others are talking. • Make smart choices and always do your best!

  7. Classroom Management -We are shelling out good behavior in first grade! Every student starts the day on the clip chart “Outstanding”. –Behavior Management is based on the Love and Logic approach. -Positive reinforcement – • Treasure Box: Students will earn “Beach Bucks” when they are caught being good. Students are allowed to go “shopping” in the mornings, on their specific day. • Weekly Behavior Sheets: Tallies are taken to document behavior. Please sign and return in your child’s blue Weekly Work folder! • Fun Friday: Students who move their clip to “Warning” less than three times a week, will earn a FUN reward on Friday!

Fun Friday • Used as an incentive for always following directions and having respect. • Games (your child will need to bring a game that fits in their backpack and that they are able to explain how to play to a friend). • Movie • Art • Outside time • Study hall – for those who had difficulty with their behavior that week or that did not return their behavior chart. • Students will bring home a behavior chart on Thursday. • Review & discuss with your child. • Sign and return in their blue Weekly Work folder on Friday!

  10. What are the BIG ideas in Math? • Beginning addition & subtraction/ using strategies/extending addition & subtraction • Beginning place value/ place value • Data • Geometry / working with 2-D & 3-D shapes • Length • Time – to the hour and half hour

  11. Phonics • Build Up! Phonics activities with sound boxes • Making Words (Literacy Centers) • Shared Reading • Writer’s Workshop mini-lessons

  12. Reading • Daily 5: Students will work independently, with a partner, and in small groups to extend and reinforce aspects of the curriculum taught in integrated lessons • CAFE: Read orally, think-aloud, comprehension skills, model strategies (whole group with student participation) • Guided Reading: Direct instruction in skills/strategies to create student-sustained reading. Students will work on comprehension, retelling, and fluency skills. *Students will practice comprehension by taking AR tests later in the year.

  13. *Super Star Reading Program* • Children will read a new book nightly to or with an adult at home. This is required nightly as homework. • Student will fill in your Reading Log in their Red Homework folder, and will color one star per book read. Goals: 1st nine weeks: 20 books (1 page front/back) 2nd nine weeks: 20 books (1 page front/back) 3rd nine weeks: 30 books (1 page front/back, and 1 side of another page) 4th nine weeks: 40 books *If students turn in their Reading Logs filled in, they will earn a star for each page completed. If students reach their goal, they will be given a certificate and recognized at the First Grade Reading Ceremony. (Teachers and students only please)

Deliver 3 – 5 whole group mini lessons each day Teach 3 – 4 small groups of children each day Confer with 3 – 6 individual students each day Hold all students accountable for eyes-on-text For Students… Engaged in the act of reading and writing for extended amounts of time Receive focused instruction on building and maintaining independence Receive tailored instruction through whole group, small group, and/or individual conferring, by their skilled classroom teacher, each day What sets The Daily Five Apart?

  16. Writing • Handwriting- Zaner-BloserManuscript • Daily 5 – Work on Writing • Shared Writing - Independent Writing - Writer’s Workshop • Writing Genres (personal narrative, opinion, informational/narrative)

Spelling • Build Up! – Monthly Phonics Focus • Phonemic Awareness: identify picture names that begin with the same sound, isolate and say first sounds, categorize rhyming words, build words by substituting sounds • Phonics: sort pictures/words by initial sounds, ending sounds, consonant blends, digraphs, word families, vowel sounds • You will be notified well in advance when we will have Spelling Tests. 

  18. Social Studies • Our Earth & Our Country – global address, continents/oceans, landforms. • American Heroes – Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Lewis & Clark with Sacajawea, Harriet Tubman, Theodore Roosevelt, Ruby Bridges, George Washington Carver

  19. Science • Weather & seasons • Water Cycle • Magnets • Sound • Light & shadows • Plants (parts & basic needs) • Animals (basic needs & compare/describe)

First Grade Assessments • Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA-Accuracy and comprehension) • Running Records • Sight Words (Focus Words lists sent home to work on at home and return when your child is ready to be tested.) • Writing Rubrics • Performance Tasks • Primary Spelling Inventory • Problem Solving • Cognitive Abilities Test

  21. Leader in Me Program*Following the 7 Habits of Healthy Kids • See the letter inside folder for an explanation of all 7 Habits. • Leadership Notebooks (Track academic and behavioral goals)

Grades and Rubric-Style Report Card 3+ Exceeds Standards- applies and inferences beyond expectations 3 Meets standards- consistently and independently 2 Progressing toward meeting the standard 1 Limited or minimum progress toward meeting the standard Practice Work – stickers/smiley faces/checkmarks/comments Graded Papers – 3+, 3, 2, 1 Please be aware that standards are performance based. Children will be assessed in a variety of ways, which will include checklists, rubrics, teacher observation and paper/pencil tasks.

  24. Homework • Homework will be sent home each night, Monday -Thursday. • Students will read 20 minutes a night, and record it on their Reading Log. (Located in their red folder) • Students need to practice math facts daily! (flash cards, math games, math websites, etc.) • Students will work on Sight Words at home and at school. • Homework should not take more than 30 minutes a night! • Sign your child’s agenda every night!

  25. Absence and Dismissal Policy • Please send a note from home if there is an absence or change in transportation (Must be in writing, not email or word of mouth) • Early dismissal? Please send in a note or e-mail notifying me of the time. • There will be no dismissal changes after 1:45 p.m. • Regular attendance is vital to your child’s success in first grade. • Prompt arrival is also vital to your child’s success. School begins at 7:45am! • If you need to make a last minute change, please contact the office. • If your child is going home with another student & is to be a CAR RIDER, they MUST have a note to take to the car rider line.

  26. Cafeteria Information • Menus are available on the Still website. • Prices: Breakfast - $1.50 -Student lunch - $2.35 -Adult lunch - $3.75 • Lunches may be pre-paid. Bring your lunch? Bring napkins & plastic utensils! *Birthdays: Treats during lunch time.

  27. Money • Any money coming to school for PTA/field trips (white envelope), lunch, ASP (brown/yellow envelope – must be prepaid), etc. should be placed in an envelope labeled with the following: - child’s name - teacher - money amount • purpose for the money • Please place these in the “Return to School” pocket in your child’s HW folder.

  28. Clinic/Medication Policies • ALL medications must be sent to the clinic in the original container. • Please send a note with all medications. • Make sure you have filled out a clinic card.

Fall Picture Day: Aug. 25th Testing: COGAT Sept. 6th-8th Conference Week: Oct. 16th-20th(A date and time will be sent home the week before, and you will sign the paper if the date and time works with your schedule.)
