  1. Over view • Energy - Definition • a) How do we get energy from food? • How is energy produced inside the cell • Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) • What happens if CoQ10 levels drop • Beneficial Effects of CoQ10 Supplementation • Reasons for Deficiency • Statin Drugs May Lower CoQ10 Levels • Recommended dietary Allowance of Coenzyme Q 10 • CoQ10 – Role in Health • Product- CoQ 10

  2. Energy Healthy capacity for doing life style activities How do we get energy from food? Food provides the energy needed by all the living cells in your body. All of this food comes directly or indirectly from green plants. However, the sun is the real source of the energy in food. Brown Rice Honey Bananas Apples Sweet Potato Eggs Spinach Almonds Beans

  3. Human body is made up of Billions of cells • Energy is produced in Mitochondria – “The Powerhouse in every cell”. • COQ10 is involved in generating energy in the form of ATP • 95% of the human body energy is generated by COQ 10 • Which part of the cell Is called as the powerhouse? • Mitochondrion is called the powerhouse of the cell, because it helps in the production of ATP(energy) which is essential for various activities of the cell, tissues and organs.

  4. How is energy produced inside the cell? • The food what we take is broken down into a simple sugar glucose. • Glucose then enters into the cell through “glucose transporters”. Then glucose is broken down to make ATP into two pathways. • Aerobic - without oxygen • Anaerobic - with oxygen

  5. Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) • Discovered in 1958 • Used in Japanese hospitals since 1974 • 5th most prescribed medicine in Japan • Research into CoQ10 led to Nobel Prize in Chemistry • Coenzyme Q10, also called coQ10, constitutes a vitamin-like substance important for human health. Mainly found in organ meats. • Prof. Dr. Peter Mitchell winning the Nobel Prize in 1978 shows 95% of Energy is produced by COQ 10 in every cell in the form of ATP

  6. What happens if CoQ10 levels drop? • US cardiologist and CoQ10 expert Dr Peter Langsjoen points out that along with the • heart; skeletal muscle, the brain, liver and gum tissue are also big energy consumers • which “require optimal amounts of CoQ10 for optimal energy production for optimal health”. • If CoQ10 body levels begin to drop, therefore, it affects our general health. • Organs with the high energy requirements Such as Heart, Liver & • Kidneys have the highest concentrations of COQ 10 Deficiency of COQ10 directly affects these vital organs functioning

  7. Beneficial Effects of CoQ10 Supplementation • Cardiovascular disease • Cardiomyopathy • Congestive heart failure • Hypertension • Atherosclerosis • Neurodegenerative diseases • Parkinson’s Disease • Alzheimer’s Disease • Neuromuscular diseases • Diabetes • Cancer • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • Asthma • Migraine • Immune disorders • HIV/AIDS • Male infertility

  8. Reasons for Deficiency After around age 35, your body's ability to synthesize CoQ10 decreases, due to increased demands for antioxidant protection and energy production. Aging and Immunity • CoQ10 can boost your immune system via, for instance, increased production of white blood cells • one study showed that coenzyme Q10 supplementation attenuates the age-related increase in DNA damage • coenzyme Q10 have been reported to decline with age . • It has been proposed that age-associated declines in tissue coenzyme Q10levels may play a role in this decline 1.Kalen A, Appelkvist EL, Dallner G. 9. CoQ10 and diabetes • Coenzyme Q10 supplementation did not influence glycemic control in either study, the authors of both studies concluded that coenzyme Q10 supplements could be used safely in diabetic patients as adjunct therapy for cardiovascular diseases.  CoQ10 and Athletes • CoQ10 is good for athletes since it leads to more energy production in their bodies and this gives them. Two studies actually found significantly greater improvement in measures of anaerobic  and aerobic  exercise performance after supplementation with a placebo compared to coenzyme Q10. 10. CoQ10 – Role in Skin health Energizing every body cell • Energy booster of the body, CoQ10, is losing day by day after you turned 20. Consumer CoQ10 helps your body to have the natural glamour.  • CoQ10 gives you more energy and great skin tone. • CoQ10 solve your skin problems.  • Acnes • Spots • Scars • Dark circles • Energy loss • Less of glow • Coarse • Oily skin

  11. Statin Drugs May Lower CoQ10 Levels • Statin drugs, or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, are a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol.  • Statins work by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that determines the rate of cholesterol formation. • Some research suggests that statin drugs may interfere with the body's production of Co q10, a substance produced naturally in the body and found in every cell. Co q10 has a key role in the mitochondria, the part of a cell that produces energy.

  12. Statins have been found to decrease Co q10 production as a side effect of their action. • A Columbia University study in New York found that 30 days of statin therapy (80 mg/day) decreased Co q10 levels by half.  • Another study by researchers at Kanazawa University in Japan found that smaller doses of statin drugs can reduce Co q10. After 8 weeks of 10 mg a day statin therapy, Co q10 levels decreased by 40 percent.
