  2. Current Design of Time Expired Popup Description of behavior: Student sees a time expired popup that says their answers have been automatically submitted. Problem: Message is incorrect. Nothing gets submitted until student clicks OK on the time expired popup within 30 seconds after time is up. If they click OK after 30 seconds (although my testing indicate much less) they will see an unfriendly data discrepancy error. Essentially at the 30 second mark, a back-end process will automatically submit their answers for them so if they click submit, there will be data collision. What’s worse, any answers not saved on the last page prior to time’s up will be lost.

Proposed Re-design of Time Expired Popup Description of behavior: When time is up, students will see a notification popup with progress indicator that says time is up and that their answers are being submitted. Students will not be able to work on the assignment once the notification pops up. The notification would automatically go away once the submission process is done and students would then see the submission confirmation page. Implementation details: The notification popup should display long enough for a student to read the message. Recommended display time: 5 seconds. If submission takes less than 5 seconds, student should still see notification popup. After 5 seconds, then they should see the submission confirmation screen.

If student happens to navigate away to another browser tab/window and then come back to the assessment after time’s up and submission’s complete, they would see the same submission confirmation screen Text for Time Expired Popup Time is up! (bold, 1st line, center align) All of your answers are being submitted (2nd line, center align) Text for submission confirmation screen Time allowed for this assessment has expired. All of your answers have been automatically submitted.
