  2. Swallowed & Inhaled Poisons • A poison is an substance that can cause injury or death when it goes inside the body. Some of the signs that a person has swallowed a poisonous substance are: Vomiting, confusion, pain or a burning sensation. Inhaled poisons are harmful fumes that can poison the body if inhaled. A big inhaled poison is Carbon monoxide. Signs of this are: pale skin, headache, distressed breathing, confusion, loss of consciousness.

  3. Sunburns • One common first-degree burn is caused by the sun. A sunburn is actually a radiation burn because its caused by the ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The risk of sunburn can be reduced by the use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more. Sign of sunburn are: Reddened skin, pain in the area of the burn, blisters in the burned area.

  4. Fractures • A fracture is a crack or break in the bone. There are two types: a closed fracture the skin remains intact. In an open fracture the bone sticks out through the skin. Signs of a possible fracture are: swelling and bruising at the injured area, pain in the injured area, deformity of the injured area such as a shortened, bent, or twisted limb. Difficulty moving the injured area.

  5. Strains and Sprains • A muscle strain can result from overexerting or pulling a muscle. Symptoms include: dull pain that worsens with movement of the injured area, swelling around the injured area. • A sprain is an injury to a ligament. Symptoms of a sprain are: a popping sound or tearing sensation at the area of the injury, pain in the injured joint, swelling of the joint, tenderness, discoloration.

  6. Dislocations • A dislocation is when a bone becomes displaced. Symptoms of a dislocation are: swelling, deformity, inability to move the joint, discoloration, tenderness, or numbness.

  7. Muscle Cramps • A muscle cramp is the sudden, painful contraction of one or more muscles. Symptoms of muscle cramps are: severe pain in the cramping muscle, inability to use the cramping muscle.
