Intro • Was Church God’s Idea? by Marc Winter • (03/30/2012) • “Yes to Jesus, No to church!” The author makes the claim that the “church” is man’s idea (pagan) and not God’s. • He says Jesus set up His “ekklesia” (G1577), and that translators intentionally mistranslated it as “church.” • He claims Heb. 13:17 about obeying the elders is intentionally mistranslated to keep people “imprisoned in an institutional religious jail.” • He says believers in Christ collectively are Jesus’ “ekklesia” and are far from what “church” is today. • He condemns the attitude that “church” is confined to the walls of a building and social activities, and is pagan in nature thought up by the Greeks and perpetuated by Catholics. Is the church man’s idea or God’s design? Is The Church God's Design?

  3. Intro Mt. 16:16-19 16. Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17. And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18. "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19. "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." Mt. 15:13-14 13. But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted. 14. "Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit." There will be churches that are not from God and they will be uprooted! How can one know if they are in the church designed by God or man-made & will be uprooted? Is The Church God's Design?

It Was Built By the Right Founder • Mt. 16:18: Jesus said, “…upon this rock I will build My church” • Church – ek (G1537): “out of” & kaleo (G2564): “to call, a calling.” • Ekklesia (G1577): “called out, calling out.” (II Thess. 2:14: By the gospel) • The “church” is the body of Christ (Col. 1:24), made up of the “called out” • “Called out” of the world (Eph. 2:1-3; II Cor. 6:14-18) by the gospel! Did Christ fulfill His promise to build the church? YES! Acts 2:47 (NKJ); 20:28 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. 20:28: "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. Is The Church God's Design?

It Was Built By the Right Founder • There is only one church Jesus built: • John Knox (1514-1572) – Presbyterians founded 1560 A.D. • Martin Luther (1483-1546) – Lutheran church founded 1580 A.D. • John Smyth (1570-1612) – Baptists founded 1609 A.D. • John Wesley (1703-1791) – Methodists founded 1729 A.D. • Chuck Smith (1927-) – Calvary Chapel founded 1965 A.D. These churches were built by men 1500-1900 years after Christ built His church! If not built by Jesus Christ, then that church is from man, and not from God! Is The Church God's Design?

  6. It Was Built In the Right Place Is. 2:1-3 1. The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2. Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. 3. And many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us concerning His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For the law will go forth from Zion And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Any church not founded in Jerusalem is not the church Jesus built! Ps. 127:1: Unless God builds the house it is in vain! Acts 1:9-12; 2:1-5; 47: The church was founded in Jerusalem! The church of Christ was built in Jerusalem as was foretold while many other “churches” were built elsewhere! Is The Church God's Design?

  7. It Was Built At the Right Time Dan. 2:44 44. "In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever. • Acts 11:15: “…as upon us at the beginning” • This points back to the day of Pentecost (Pente = 50; cost = day) in Acts 2. • The church was established 50 days after Christ rose from the dead. • This was long before the denominations came into being! Any church not built in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost is not the right church! The church of Christ was built at the right time as God foretold through the prophets! Is The Church God's Design?

  8. It Was Built On the Right Foundation Is. 28:16 16. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed. • Scriptures teach Christ is the foundation! • I Cor. 3:10-11: The foundation is Christ, and no other foundation can be laid! • I Pet. 2:4-6: A living foundation upon which living stones are being built! (Quotes from Is. 28:16!!) The church of Christ was founded by and on Christ – no other foundation can be laid! Is The Church God's Design?

  9. It Wears the Right Name Mt. 16:18 18. "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. “MY” is a personal pronoun that denotes possession – the church belongs to Christ! • Names given for the church: • Church(es) of Christ (Rom. 16:16); church of God (Acts 20:28); church of the Living God (I Tim. 3:15); church of the firstborn (Heb. 12:23) Any church called by a different name is not the right church! The church of Christ wears no other name than what is given in Scripture! Is The Church God's Design?

  10. It Has the Right Head Those in the Catholic Church are taught the Pope is the head of the church! Eph. 5:23 (Col. 1:18) 23. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. • Important to understand body metaphor: • Some believe in one body with two heads (Catholicism). • Some believe in one Head with many bodies (denominations). The head controls the body, thus the church is subject to its Head, Christ! The church of Christ neither recognizes nor submits to any other Head than Christ! Is The Church God's Design?

It Teaches the Right Doctrine • From the time of its establishment the church of Christ teaches the correct doctrine: • Acts 2:42: They continued “steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine.” • II Tim. 3:16-17: The Scriptures are “profitable for doctrine.” • I Tim. 4:16: “Continue in them.” No other man made creeds or manuals needed! • Man-made creeds and manuals change with time • Rom. 14:17: “For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” Many churches today are little more than social clubs! The church of Christ teaches no other doctrine than that of Christ (II Jn. 9)! Is The Church God's Design?

It Observes the Right Baptism • The doctrine of Christ teaches one must be baptized in order to be saved! • Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38; 10:48; I Pet. 3:21: Jesus said it; the apostles taught it! • Baptism is: • Baptizo (G907): “To immerse, submerge; to make overwhelmed.” • Acts 8:36-40; Rom. 6:4; Col. 2:11-12: “Down into water” & “buried.” • Acts 2:37-38: Peter said to “repent and be baptized!” • Acts 2:47 (NKJ): After being baptized, God added them to the church. • Acts 10:47-48: Peter “ordered” (NKJ: “commanded”) the household of Cornelius to be baptized! • I Cor. 12:13: Baptism is means to enter the “body,” the church! The church of Christ teaches the means of salvation and entrance into the church is baptism as Christ and the apostles did! (Acts 2:47) Is The Church God's Design?

Conclusion The church as described in the Scriptures is designed by God, and not man-made The church as seen in denominations and by some claiming to be the Lord’s church are indeed man-made and not designed by God! (Mt. 15:13-14: God will uproot them!) • God describes the church in terms that demonstrate its uniqueness and special qualities! • Body of Christ (Eph. 1:22-23) • Household of God (Eph. 2:19) • Temple of God (Eph. 2:21-22) • Kingdom of God (Eph. 5:5) • Bride of Christ (Eph. 5:23-32) Is The Church God's Design?

  14. Conclusion The church is important to God and to man! One cannot say, “Yes to Jesus” and “No to the church!” – They are inseparable! • It is important to know if we are in the right church, and not one that will be “uprooted” • Eph. 5:23: Jesus will save those in His body; No other church! Obey the gospel God’s way and enter the church God designed and will one day reward! Is The Church God's Design?

  15. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
