Arrayed Maps STEP 1 - Brainstorming Brainstorm with the class to identify the “big ideas”of the unit Add any significant ideas or concepts not identified by the class List the ideas in column form on the board Divide the class into pairs or heterogeneous groups of four. Randomly assign each group one of the ideas listed on the board 46
Arrayed Maps STEP 2 - Constructing OPTION 1: Allow each group to analyze their topic and then select and then develop the type of phenomena map that best fits that topic -OR- OPTION 2: Randomly assign each group a different phenomena map and have them develop it based on the big idea they were assigned. Try to facilitate the development of a wide array of phenomena maps that depict the big ideas of the unit Only include the types of phenomena maps in which students are already familiar 46
Arrayed Maps STEP 3 - Sharing OPTION 1: Ask each group to share the results of the phenomena map they developed with the class to review the big idea they were assigned -OR- OPTION 2: Use numbered-heads-together technique; each student in the new group shares the map developed by his/her original group Each student in a group is assigned a number Groups are re-formed by having all students with the same assigned number form a new group (“all the 1’s in this group, all the 2’s in that group,” etc.) 46
