  5. General Characteristics According to 2001-2009 fatality data: • 91% were males • 45% occurred between 3:00p.m. and 9:00p.m. • 61% occurred on local streets and roads • 64% owned their bike for less than 2 years • 42% were riding a sport bike

General Characteristics (cont) • 71% of all motorcycle fatalities were the fault of the rider • 20 – 29 year olds account for 29% of all motorcycle fatalities • 49% were single vehicle crashes • 45% of all multiple vehicles crashes were the fault of the rider • When the rider was at fault in a multiple vehicle crash, 53% of the time the rider was speeding • When the rider was at fault in a single vehicle crash, 41% of the time speed was a major factor and 26% of the time the rider failed to negotiate a curve
