Facebook & Your Future • “How Companies Use Facebook to Hire and Fire Employees” • ~45% of employers now reportedly use social media sites like Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter to screen potential employees. • Employers are able to find information that is used in their decision to fire a job applicant. • 35% of employers surveyed, reported to have found content that cause them not to hire a candidate for an open position.

Computer Monitoring • Can My Boss Do That? – Computer Monitoring • Your boss can monitor: • Internet use • Software downloads • Documents or files stored on your computer • What websites you visit and how long you stay • Anything that is displayed on your computer screen • How long you’re on your computer • How fast you can type • If you type any key words from from a list • E-mails (that you get or send) • Instant messaging and chatting

Why the monitor: • Because they are worried about: • Workers wasting time • Bandwidth use • Exposing their computer systems to viruses • Making sure that employees do not share secret company information • Making sure employees don’t send emails that harass another worker, prove discrimination, or could be a problem in a lawsuit • Know the Law: • Federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act, 18 U.S.C.§2511

Unpatriotic Acts? • FBI can search and seize records or personal belongings without a warrant, without showing probable cause – and without ever notifying even innocent people of searches. • FBI can easily obtain information about a person’s reading habits, religious affiliations, Internet surfing and other expressive activities that would be “chilled” by the threat of investigation. • “Gag Order” that prohibits those served from telling anyone – ever – that the FBI demanded information, even if the information is not tied to a particular suspect and poses no risk to national security. • Sometimes personal rights must be given up. • It’s better to be safe than sorry. • Agree? Disagree? Middle?
