National Headlines • April 14, 1971, there was a huge anti war march held in Washington. • During the protest at Kent State University, 4 students were killed and 9 students were wounded by the National Guard. • May 17, 1972, the Watergate Scandal became the top news broadcast in the U.S. • In 1975, South Vietnam failed to North Vietnam becoming communist. • Andrew Young and Shirley Chisholm became the first African Americans in the House of Representatives. • In 1972, George McGovern, governor of Dakota, was shot five times while campaigning for president. • Also in 1972, Governor George Wallace was shot and paralyzed while campaigning in the presidential election.

President Ford announced Florida as a major disaster area. • Hurricane Bob and Hurricane David hit in the year of 1979.
Technology • By 1972, the United States launched Apollo ad it landed on the moon. • By 1973, Atari introduced the first reasonable T.V. game. • By the end of the 70s, engineers had invented tools to help detect and diagnose health problems. • RV’s became very popular. Many families invested in RV’s, and they used them for transportation and housing. • In 1973, the first sky lab was invented. • The Walkman, VCR, microwave oven, and 8-track tapes were invented during the 1970s.They were all successful inventions.
Music • In the 1970s, music changed drastically. The new tune was known as “Rock and Roll”. • This new tune of music influence the decade with the disco theme. • Popular artist: • Led Zeplin, Areosmith, the Bee Gees, Alice Cooper, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, and the Electric Light Orchestra
Entertainment • There were many clubs that opened during the seventies, which revolved around the disco theme. • Sitcoms were watched in the majority of Americans homes. • Americans also went to movie theaters for entertainment.
Transportation • Many families used RVs to travel during vacations. • In northern cities, cabs were used frequently. • The Chevy Vega and Ford Pinto were designed to help reduce the use of gas.
Literature • Many books in the 1970s revolved around the theme of man’s alienation for their spiritual roots. • There were many authors such as, Joyce Carol Oats, Kurt Vonneegut, and Rod McKuen. • One of the strongest authors known as Toni Morrison symbolized her African American culture.
Women’s Fashion • Women continued to exposed their bodies in the 1970s. • Many women wore ankle length dresses, bell bottoms, baggy pants, knitted shorts and micro-mini skirts. • Button down shirts and vest became popular. They were bright in color. Many women had a tie in the front of the shirt showing their stomach • Women usually wore high calf muscles boots or high heels. • Accessories became popular. Typically mood rings, peace earrings, neck ties,head bans and beaded necklaces. • Women’s hair was typically worn down with a braid on the side or afros.
Men’s Fashion • Men wore their hair shoulder length. • They usually wore bellbottoms with colorful patches. • Platform shoes became extremely popular for men. • Leisure suits wore worn typically everyday for men. • Button down shirts were also popular.
Sports • Once President Nixon established peace between the U.S and China, the Ping Pong team was established. • Many athletes flourished during the 1970s. • Hank Aaron topped Babe Ruth’s record. • Martina Navrotilova went pro in tennis. She became famous, and won 43 to 37 with her rivalry Chris Evert.
Communication • Many people communicated in the form of protests. • The telephone was used, but the radio was the main source of communication.
Scientific Inventions • The floppy disc was invented by Alan Shugart. • The laser and ink-jet printer was designed. • The word processor for the computer. • The food processor was also invented.
