  1. Changes in Assessment with the Common Core Standards Mari Fridgen – MREC PD/Curriculum Coordinator

  2. Before Common Core State Standards

  3. Now Aligned to the Common Core!

  4. 7th Grade Math Seventh graders at SunviewMiddle School were helping to renovate a playground for kindergartners at a nearby elementary school. City regulations require that the sand underneath the swings be at least 15 inches deep. The sand under both swing sets was only 12 inches deep when they started. The rectangular area under the small swing set measures 9 feet by 12 feet and required 40 bags of sand to increase the depth by 3 inches. How many bags of sand will the students need to cover the rectangular area under the large swing set if it is 1.5 times as long and 1.5 times as wide as the area under the small swing set?

  5. CHEATS:PEEKCOPYDROP OUT TRANSITION TO THE COMMON CORE!!

  6. *Focus strongly where the Standards focus *Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades *Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application Shifts in Mathematics

  7. Grade 3 Math Previous Example • What number does the number line show? 1 2 1/3 1 2/3 1/4 1 1/3 None 2/3 1/3 1 1/3 3/2 None

  8. Grade 3 Math Prototype a. Draw these points on the number line: 1/2, 2/2, 3/2, 4/2, 5/2, and 6/2. Label the points. b. Draw a point on the number line for 11/3. Label the point. Be as exact as possible. 0 2 3 1 4 5 4 0 2 3 1 5

  9. Another Grade 3 Prototype • PARCC 3rd Grade Prototype

  10. Algebra Previous Example • Reggie learns to perform 2 vocal pieces during each week of lessons. Write an equation that shows the relationship between the number of weeks w and the number of pieces learned p. 1/3 1 2/3 1/4 1 1/3 None 2w = p 2p = w wp = 2 2wp = x

  11. Algebra Prototype: • Prototype

  12. ELA Grade 7 Previous Example • Previous Grade 7 ELA Example 1/3 1 2/3 1/4 1 1/3 None

  13. ELA Grade 7 Prototype • ELA Grade 7 Ptototype 1/3 1 2/3 1/4 1 1/3 None

  14. Shifts for ELA/Literacy • Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction • Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational • Regular practice with complex text and its academic language
