  1. Renovation of the Heart

  2. Paradigm – a way of thinking • Remember • Repent • Recover

  3. Strategy – a way of acting • Conviction • Confession • Repentance • Faith • Obedience

  4. Two Main Goals: • Build our relationship with God (Love the Lord your God) • Build our relationship with each other (Love your neighbor)

  5. Three Objectives to Meet Our Goals: • Seek God’s Grace • Pursue Spiritual Health • Build Godly Community

  6. Seeking God’s Grace (A mini study of Galatians)

  7. Today’s Focus: • What is Grace and why do we need it? • How do we seek what can only be freely given away? • How does Growing in God’s Grace affect our lives in a practical way

  8. What is Grace? • Unmerited Favor

  9. Why do we need this Unmerited Favor? • You and I were created for a relationship with God • Our sin separated us from that relationship • There is nothing that we can do to reconcile this relationship on our own • BUT

  10. Why do we need Grace? • Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin • Jesus rose from the dead that we might have life, now and eternally • Jesus offers eternal life (or a reconciled relationship) to those who will repent of their sin by placing faith in Jesus Christ(Paul Gotthardt)

  11. We need Graceto restore our relationship with God!

  12. Today’s Focus: • What is Grace and why do we need it? • How do we seek what can only be freely given away? • How does Growing in God’s Grace affect our lives in a practical way

  13. Galatians 1:1-2a • Paul, an apostle — not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead

  14. Galatians 1:1-2a • Paul, an apostle — not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead

  15. What is an Apostle? • An “Apostle” = • one sent on a mission • with a message • with the full authority of representation • an ambassador

  16. If we were looking to hire an apostle, what kind of person would we look for? • What Qualities? • What Qualifications?

  17. Saul of Tarsus • Terrorizing the Church • Gal. 1:13 • Acts 9:1,2 • Acts 7:57-8:3 • A Driven Zealot • Gal 1:14

  18. Galatians 1:13 • For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it.

  19. Acts 9:1-2 • But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

  20. The Stoning of Stephen (Acts 7:57–8:3) • But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him. Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, " Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, " Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison.

  21. Nobody is Beyond God’s Reach • God’s Grace does the unthinkable: • Forgives / Saves

  22. Galatians 1:14-16 • And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles

  23. Eph 2:8-9, John 15:16, 6:44 • For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast • You did not choose me, but I chose you • No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.

  24. Salvation is totally God’s work • It originates in the sovereign will of God (Acts 13:48; Rom 8:29 Eph 1:3-7) • and it is implemented by His grace (Eph 2:8-9; 1Thes 2:13; 2Tim 2:10; Titus1:1; 1Pet 1:1)(Paul Gotthardt)

  25. Today’s Focus: • What is Grace and why do we need it? • How do we seek what can only be freely given away? • How does Growing in God’s Grace affect our lives in a practical way

  26. What is Grace? • Unmerited Favor • of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues(Strong’s Dictionary)

  27. 1 Cor 13:4-8Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends

  28. Galatians 1:23-24 • They only were hearing it said, "He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy." And they glorified God because of me. • 2Cor 1:12 • For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

  29. John 15:8-11 • By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

  30. Galatians 1:2b-3 • To the churches of Galatia: Graceto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, No Grace – No Peace Know Grace – Know Peace

  31. Galatians 1:4 • who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father • We see God’s Purposeful Action to restore us to a right relationship with Him. • And there is no other way!!!

  32. Galatians 1:5 • to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. • And in all things – “to God be the Glory”

  33. Galatians 1:1-5 • Paul, an apostle — not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead — and all the brothers who are with me. To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

  34. What happens when we don’t give all the Glory to God? We replace the Gospel of Grace with a gospel of works.

  35. Galatians 1:6-7 • I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel — not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

  36. Grace versus the Law • The Law can point out flaws in your life • The Law cannot help you rise above the flaw

  37. Ephesians 3:17-19 • so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith —that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

  38. 1 Cor 13:1-3 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

  39. 1 Cor 13:4-8Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends

  40. Are our struggles any different than the Galatians? • Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh. Gal 3:3 • But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." Jam 4:6 • But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, Gal 6:14
