  2. Review • With your shoulder partner, name 2 things that were an advantage for the north, and 2 things that were an advantage for the south.

  3. Union and Confederate Tactics

  4. The Confederate Strategy • At first they took a defensive Position. They didn’t want to conquer the north. • The south depended on King Cotton. They controlled the largest cotton supply for Europe. • They cut off their cotton supply to Britain and France hoping it would get them to offer the south help.

  5. What does the Northern strategy look like to you?

  6. The Union Strategy • The north took an offensive strategy. • General Winfield Scott developed the Anaconda Planin order to smother the South’s economy. • This plan required the north to set up a blockade(The north used it’s armed forces to prevent the south from trading any goods) • This plan also meant they had to take control of the Mississippi river. • Many people thought this plan would take too long, so President Lincoln ordered an invasion of Virginia.

  7. Summary 1. Paragraph: • What were the Union and Confederate tactics at the beginning of the American Civil War? • If you were the President of the north or the south what is something you might have done differently? (Keep in mind the advantages you learned about yesterday.) 2. Illustration • Illustrate the tactics of the north or the south on the bottom half of the page.
