  7. Promised Land • Prefigures Heaven • Israelites had to fight and suffer to get it • Christians can’t enter heaven, the true Promised Land, unless they fight enemies of their salvation (sin)

  8. Renewal of the Covenant • Circumcision

  9. Battle of Jericho • March silently around Jericho once a day for 6 days. • The 7th day, march around 7 times. Priests blow horns, people shout and the walls fall down

  10. Ban • When entire cities are ordered to be wiped out

  12. Book of Judges • Cycle of Idolatry (sin) and repentance

  13. Judges • Temporary leaders appointed by God to lead the people of Israel when enemies oppressed them before they had kings • “Soldier-prophets”

  14. Deborah • Female Judge who helped Barak lead the Israelite army and defeated the Canaanites

  15. Barak – is told by Deborah that God wants him to lead an army against: • Jabin - the Canaanite king • Sisera – General of Jaban’s army • Deborah tells Barak that he will win, but Barak wants Deborah to go with him. If she does, he will not get the glory, it will go to a woman.

  16. Gideon • Judge that put fleece on the ground to test God • Fought the Midianites and won

  17. Samson • Strong judge whose strength was in his hair (obedience to God) • Broke vow and lost strength

  18. Ruth • Left home and family in Moab to go with Naomi to Bethlehem • Enters the bloodline of Jesus • “Your people will be my people, your God will be my God.”

  19. Ruth marries Boaz Has baby named Obed Obed becomes the father of Jesse Jesse is the father of David

  20. The Book of Ruth • Emphasizes that Holiness and salvation are not just for the Jews, but for all

  21. Samuel • Last Judge of Israel (prophet)

  22. 1,2 Samuel • Tell stories of the 1st kings of Israel (Saul, David) anointed by Samuel

  23. Why Israel wanted a king • To be like other nations • For unity

  24. Anointed one • Christ • Messiah

  25. Saul • 1st king of Israel

  26. Saul’s main sin • Not obeying God

  27. Obedience is better than sacrifices!

  28. Samuel’s torn mantle • Symbolizes the kingdom of Israel is torn from Saul

  29. David is anointed by Saul

  30. David and Goliath • David’s victory over Goliath-a type of every Christian’s ultimate victory over evil. • David’s life prefigures the coming of the true shepherd

  31. David is credited for writing many of the Psalms
