    4. 4 History A transit point between East/West & North/South 1809-1919 British involvement (3 wars) 1979-1989 Soviet invasion 1994-2001 Rise of the Taliban 7 Oct 2001 US Attacks Bin Laden planned 9/11 from Afghanistan US demanded the Taliban turn him over When they refused, we attacked Failure to secure Afghanistan means terrorists could use the country for future attacks.

    8. 8 Regimental Combat Team 8 deploys to Afghanistan and provides security for the people of Helmand, defeats insurgents, and expands Afghan Security Force in order to support assist the Government of Afghanistan.

    9. 9 Flight dates are subject to change and we wont know definitively until approx. 48 hours prior to departure. Please be patient.

Pay Summary Hostile Fire Pay: $225 (monthly) Family Sep Allowance: $250 (married/not leg sep) Hardship Duty Pay: $100 Deployed Per Diem: $105 (not paid on R&R) TOTAL $680 Split Pay/Casual Pay Savings Deposit Program Combat Leave 14 PAY SUMMARY Hostile Fire Pay: $225 (monthly) Family Sep Allowance: $250 (married/not leg sep) Hardship Duty Pay: $100 Deployed Per Diem: $105 (not paid on R&R) TOTAL $680 -Everyone rates Basic Allowance for Subsistence while deployed. There will not be a discounted meal rate deducted from Marines previously issued a meal card. However, it will begin immediately upon your return. Federal/State (monthly) tax break varies by base pay (tax exempt gross pay cannot exceed highest Enlisted $7,386.30) ****REMINDER, these benefits potentially may not be reflected in your paycheck for approximately 2 pay cycles. Split Pay/Casual Pay Both allow you access to your pay while forward deployed. Split Pay: Must elect to enroll prior to deployment. Allows you to manage your money better by setting a dollar amount each month to set aside Ending positive balance at end of deployment; money credited back once stop split pay is reported on Unit diary. Casual Pay: Only used when you need it. However, you may end up taking out several times before it hits your pay. Its a good idea to bring approximately $200 dollars to start off the deployment. Savings Deposit Program $10,000 maximum contributable amount. 10% Annual dividends (guaranteed) Must be in country 30 days IOT contribute. All unallotted pay may be contributed, not to exceed net disposable income. If deposited before 10th of each month it accrues interest for entire month; if after the 10th, it begins interest accrual the following month. Ensure that your agent has a Power of Attorney that grants them authorization to start/stop/change allotments. Withdrawals may be obtained via fax or e-mail. Combat Leave The leave you earn in while in a combat zone is considered combat leave. You still earn 2.5 days of leave each month. This leave is not in addition to your Annual Leave listed on your LES separately. When you return to the US and use your leave, the pay you earn during those days are not taxed. PDMRA If you break 2:1 dwell, you may rate extra days of leave (visible in MOL).     17. 17 Communicating with your Marine Satellite Phones/Internet computers Mail Postal Motomail Website: www.MotoMail.us Mailing address: RANK, FULL NAME RCT-8 (section name) UNIT 73915 FPO AE 09510-3915 Red Cross Message: 1-877-272-7337 Satellite Phones/Internet computers available in limited numbers. Will be temporarily shut down in the event of casualties. Snail Mail PLEASE understand that mail may not come for weeks after you send it. Mail is the LAST thing I will move; Chow, Water, Ammunition, Medical supplies all come first. YOU MAY NOT HEAR FROM YOUR MARINE / SAILOR for 3 weeks or more at a time. This is because we are moving locations, computers break, your loved one is extremely busy, etc. Please keep your boxed to about a shoe box size. We simply do not have the cargo capacity to move large boxes. If you send large boxes, they will probably never arrive. FEDEX and DHL, etc do not deliver to our location. You will need to fill out a customs form on all packages (16 ounces or more) coming to your Marine or Sailor. You may not mail alcohol or pornography. If a Marine or Sailor receives this material, he will be court martialed Service members can send letter mail FREE from Afghanistan. American Red Cross: 1-877-272-7337 How do you send a message? Only emergencies of a birth, death or serious illness. Must have contact information for hospital or Doctor. Message is sent to the command within a few hours after American Red Cross is contacted.     19. For all who will deploy for 270 days or more. 15 days of FREE leave Leave starts the day after you arrive at final destination and ends the day you check back in to the airport. Can take it between the 2nd and 10th months of our deployment We cannot guarantee a specific date for leave, so please dont plan an elaborate cruise or trip. Flights come back through Atlanta or Dallas Follow on flights go to anyplace in the US You can go oversees BUT we cant guarantee exact dates There is NO cost to this program. 19
