  1. Does case methodology have an effect on student attitudes and content knowledge in a large non-majors biology lecture? What about case is causing this impact?

  2. Why Case Method? • Works in other disciplines (law, business, PBL in medicine) Herreid 1994 • NSF buy in ( National Center for Case Teaching in Science) • Is innovative and novel in biology classrooms (wow cool factor!) • Call for sound case research (mixed method design) Lundeberg & Yadav 2006

  3. Research Design • Within course design: • Experimental: units/topics delivered via case method • Comparison: units/topics delivered via interactive lecture • Switch design in Y2 (case topics get lectured) • Clickers AND Discussion used in both deliveries—case differs by story/narrative and dilemma component • Mixed method: quantitative and qualitative

  4. Research Design • Attitudes: Survey, discussion group observations, interviews of peer leaders - engagement, Interest in biology, perception of learning gains • Content Knowledge: exam questions correlated to mode of delivery (case vs lecture), inventories?
