  1. Soil

  11. Mother of farming

  12. Soil Fertility: Sections of a fertile soil and infertile soil

  13. What are the factors that effects the soil fertility ?

  14. The three major components of Agriculture production… Soil structure, soil fertility, organic matter, flora/fauna, Erosion and control, water conservation techniques Recycling of nutrients Importance on closed cycles: N, P, K, S, C Balanced crop nutrition, crop management, associated crops, trap, relay, cover, intercropping, rotation, manuring, mulching, composting, biodiversity

  15. Source of soil minerals

  16. Soil structure

  17. Why is soil structure so important and how it can be improved?

  18. Soil fauna can be classified into larger soil organisms and soil Micro organisms

  19. Earthworm : the friend of farmer; Natural plough; Invaluable helper

  20. Organic Soil Building O.M. is in the upper 6 inches of soil O.M. is difficult to maintain O.M. is transient Picture from Rodale

  21. Loss of Organic Matter-Cultivation increases aeration and increases the loss of O.M.-About 90% of the humus added to the soil is lost the first year-Lost as carbon dioxide, oxygen and water

  22. Factors Contributing to the Loss of Organic Matter-Cultivation-High temperatures-Moisture

  23. Value of O.M. in Soil1. Improve physical condition2. Increase moisture holding capacity of sandy soils3. Increase pore-space of clay soil and aides in dry-down4. Increases soil fertility5. Increases the ability of soil to release nutrient chemicals

  24. Value of O.M. in Soil6. Improves conditions for beneficial soil micro-organisms7. Enhances the pH buffering capacity8. Helps reduce soil crusting9. Lends soils to be more drought resistant

  25. SOIL ORGANIC MATTER

  26. Adding Fresh OM Added

  27. Is Soil organic matter so important? YES, Reasons ………………… A loose and soft soil structure has more pores Good aeration and good infiltration of rain water Visible O Matter particles acts as tiny sponges Non visible, minute soil particles acts as binding agents for better structure Serve as feed for many beneficial org. like earth worms etc Provides suitable environment to soil MO

  28. How to improve organic matter in soil ?

  29. How can one manage to get biomass for organic matter generation ?

  30. Green Manuring

  31. Some organic manures…..

  32. How to make compost ? Step 1 1. Collect the composting material • Choose a shady location • Pile up seperately • Collect plenty of plant material • Chop coarse material

  33. How to make compost ? Step 2 2. Set up the heap From bottom to top pile up… N- rich material C- rich material Plants parts and twigs Humidify the materials Pile up loosely in layers Cover with earth or straw

  34. How to make compost ? Step 3 3. Turn the heap Turn the heap 1st after 2–3 weeks 2nd after 3 months When temperature declines. • Outside material goes inside.

  35. How to make compost ? Step 4 4. Let it rest to mature For three months

  36. Practical soil fertility management for organic crop production starts with a soil test Amendments added should be based on the soil test results and the requirements of the crop being grown The nutrient content (at least the major nutrients NPK) of the organic fertilizer or amendment should be known before application Composted animal manures are the preferred source of organic fertilizer Summary

  37. THIS EARTH HAS NOT BEEN INHERITED BY OUR PARENTS OR GRAND PARENTS BUT LEASED BY OUR CHILDREN AND HENCE WE HAVE TO LEAVE THIS EARTH A BETTER PLACE FOR THEM TO LIVE AND enjoy………………… SEATLE Red Indian Chief

  38. Give a hand to the land

  39. Thank you
