  1. Project Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo! Prom Dreams Come True Math for AAS General Education Spring, 2009 Instructor: Barbara Rademacher Kimberly Winters MariselaPatolzin Ginger Seale Lejuana Tyler

Introduction • The Goal ~ To provide free prom dresses and accessories for local young ladies. • The Mission ~ Impact the lives of local high school Juniors and Seniors by helping make their prom dreams come true. • This project is important because every young lady has the right to feel like a princess at prom and dress up for the prince. • Projects similar to this one take place nationwide and we hope to start a grass roots project here.

Community Benefits • We targeted NWA and we reached out to the community of students, namely young ladies, that will be attending NWACC in the coming years thereby creating a bridge from High School to NWACC • We hope that this is the foundation of a much larger project in the future….We have hopes that it will grow and develop much like the lovely ladies that we are trying to help. Prom is a very special time in a young girl’s life and should not be hindered by hardships. This project is to help build the dreams of girls who might not otherwise be able to attend their prom. Creating a princess is quite a joy and a blessing for us.

You feel really connected with one another all dressed up, all differences, peer groups, etc seem to disappear. I've never felt closer to my friends than on these dances.” • “Do everything you can, go to every event possible, try every food, drink every drink, dance to every song with every person. Course Content • Used statistical data: • Percentage of students on free and reduced lunches at local high schools • Queried the young ladies at the event concerning the need for continuation of the project • Gathered information regarding sizes donated and needed • Organized data into various charts • Used EAST lab and Excel to develop the charts

  10. Girls Dress Sizes 38% of the girls that came to this years event wear a size 4 and 23% wear a size 8 Using this chart one could estimate that approximately 66% of the dresses need to be size 4-8

  13. Future Projects • Perfect project for a NWACC club to undertake and continue in the coming years. • Possibilities: • Providing a community service announcement with the program: • Date-Rape Prevention • Abstinence, Teen Pregnancy Prevention • Alcohol Awareness • Fashion Show

Project Timeline • 1/26/09 ~ began project planning • 2/2/09 – 4/6/09 ~ investigated several ways to go about project • 4/6/09 ~Made decision to have drive at NWACC • 4/8/09 ~ Started collecting dresses • 4/18/09 ~ Had the “Prom Dreams Come True” day • 4/20/09 ~ Spoke with Phi Theta Kappa president about the possibility of the club taking over the project for future years • 4/27/09 ~ Presented to class • Near future ~ Present project at a Phi Theta Kappa meeting
